Fox News’ Jesse Watters Parrots White House Lie That Trump Created More Jobs For Black Americans Than Obama

Watters parroted a ridiculous fact wheeled out by White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders at the briefing today in order to defend President Donald Trump against allegations of racism.

When asked if there is a tape of the president using the N-word, Sanders said she could not guarantee it, before claiming that Trump has “created” more jobs for African-Americans than former President Barack Obama:

“This president since he took office created 700,000 new jobs for African-Americans,” Sanders said. “After eight years of president Obama in office, he only created 195,000 jobs for African-Americans. President Trump in his first year and a half has already tripled what president Obama did in eight years.”

Fact checkers pounced. CNBC wrote that Sanders “vastly overstated President Trump’s record on black job creation.”

The numbers, CNBC reported, from the Bureau of Labor Statistics:

During the eight years President Barack Obama was in office, black employment rose by roughly 3.2 million, or more than four times the 700,000 jobs added so far since Donald Trump took office.

The Washington Post found the same: “In terms of entire administrations, there was a much larger expansion of the number of black jobs under Obama than Trump — four times as many.”

The Post also noted that the increase in the employment rate is “a trend that didn’t begin in January 2017 with the inauguration of Donald Trump but shortly after the end of the recession during Barack Obama’s first term.”

That did not deter Jesse Watters, however, who in his own defense of Trump against allegations of racism echoed Sanders’ false claims.

“I think Sarah Sanders said the right thing today when she was confronted about the racial issue,” Watters said. “She said, in one and a half years, Donald Trump has created 700,000 jobs for African-Americans in this country, and in eight years, President Barack Obama had only created 195,000.”

“I’ll just let that speak for itself,” Watters said.
