Gavin Newsom Admits on The View That He’s Spooked By the Push to Recall Him: ‘Of Course I’m Worried’

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) is not holding back his feelings — he’s concerned about the push to recall him as the Golden State’s chief executive.

Appearing on The View Tuesday, Newsom candidly addressed the effort to remove him from office. He began by blasting conspiracy theorists he claims are the primary drivers of the recall petition — which, the governor acknowledges, appears to have gathered the necessary number of signatures to force a recall election.

“This is just objective truth, the chief proponent of this recall petition supports putting microchips into migrants, into immigrants,” Newsom said. “The other proponents, the top ten proponents, the people that are behind this, are members of the Three Percenters — the right-wing militia group. The Proud Boys, who supported the insurrection, are folks that quite literally, enthusiastically, support QAnon conspiracies. And so that’s the origin here.”

Despite accusing bad actors of leading the charge against him, Newsom — nonetheless — admitted that the recall push does have him freaked.

“Am I worried about it? Of course I’m worried about it,” the governor said. “The nature of these things, the up-or-down question, the zero-sum nature of the question, is challenging. It’s vexing. So we’re taking it seriously.”

View co-host Sara Haines challenged the governor on his November attendance at a maskless, crowded dinner at the high-end restaurant French Laundry. Newsom reiterated his regret for showing up.

“It was a terrible mistake,” he said. “It was a friend’s 50th birthday. There were too many people at the table. At the end of the day, I own that, and I’m going to be held to account for that. Trust me, I’ve held myself to a higher level of accountability than anybody possibly could. So of course it was mistake. And I didn’t shy away from that, never made one prior in that respect, or since. And we learn from that. We’re all human. But bottom line is I own that.”
