GOP Rep. Gaetz: Jeff Sessions Has ‘Stockholm Syndrome’ With ‘His Captors Over There in the Deep State’
Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) said Monday that Attorney General Jeff Sessions has “Stockholm Syndrome” with regard to the “Deep State” because Sessions will not renounce his recusal from the ongoing investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.
Gaetz is one of several Republicans demanding unredacted documents from the Department of Justice, which they say will give them more oversight of the Russia investigation as well as more information as to whether the FBI “spied” on the Trump campaign, as the president has suggested.
Gaetz told Fox News’ Harris Faulkner on Outnumbered Overtime that he and other Republican lawmakers are “in groundhog day” with the Department of Justice: “[W]e request documents. They give us too many redactions. We fight with them back and forth.”
Gaetz further called on President Donald Trump to declassify the documents.
Gaetz added that he wants Sessions to renounce his recusal from the Russia investigation. The Florida congressman said he had spoken with the attorney general, but that Sessions “said he is totally unwilling” to renounce his recusal.
“It’s like, you know, over at the Department of Justice he has Stockholm Syndrome. He’s become sympathetic with the captors over there in the deep state,” Gaetz said.
“[T]he recusal itself is the problem,” Gaetz added. He further stated that “there is no legal or factual basis” for Sessions’ recusal.
“[A]nd the consequence is [Deputy Attorney General] Rod Rosenstein, the individual who is signing renewals of the FISA warrants now has the ability to send this latest allegation off to investigation land and then use that as a basis to not produce documents to Congress because he can state it’s the subject of the ongoing investigation. Gaetz said, once again calling on Trump to declassify the documents which he said would “expose the Deep State for what they have done.”
