Howard Kurtz to Morning Joe: Journalists Have a ‘Cultural Disdain’ For President Trump

The gang over at Morning Joe sat down earlier today with author, and Fox News host, Howard Kurtz, to discuss his just-released book and, of course, President Donald Trump and how the media treats him.

Throughout the interview, Kurtz kept discussing the notion that members of the press keep falling into the “president’s trap,” meaning they are letting him set the narrative and attacking him at all times, thus creating the idea that they have a bias against him.

“That is the trap. When everything is at 11, nothing is at 11,” Kurtz said. “When every single thing he does creates this tsunami of negative coverage that drowns out everything else, it helps Donald Trump because it helps him dominate the news agenda every hour of our waking lives.”

Joe Scarborough asked the author how journalists are supposed to fact-check Trump, inferring he lies often, without coming off as being against the president.

“Of course I think there needs to be fact checking. The problem is people increasingly don’t believe the fact checkers because there is a tone,” he said. “An almost sort of cultural disdain, I think, that a lot of journalists privately have for this president.”

Kurtz continued to pile on the media, despite a bit of pushback from co-host Mika Brzezinski (who invoked his own network and their coverage of Barack Obama).

“Sometimes the media are their own worst enemy,” he said. “I think that there is a sense in the country that we are constantly on this guy’s case, that we never give him the benefit of the doubt.”
