Jake Tapper Congratulates and Thanks John McCain ‘Since President Trump Would Not Do It’

In remarks today as part of his signing of the ‘John S. McCain National Defense Authorization Act’, President Trump did not congratulate, thank, or even speak the name of Sen. John McCain, for whom the act was named. So on CNN’s The Lead, Jake Tapper went ahead and did so instead.

First, Tapper played a montage of all the people who were thanked by Trump by name. Then, in front of a graphic reading “Forget Something?”, Tapper leaned in on it.

“That was President Trump just a few minutes ago thanking a laundry list of people before officially signing the ‘John S. McCain National Defense Authorization Act’. One person who wasn’t on that list of people that he thanked? Outspoken Trump critic and the namesake of the bill, Senator John McCain,” said Tapper. “You know, the decorated war hero, who was a prisoner of war, who continues to serve as a United States senator, the chairman of the Armed Services Committee.”

“The bill the president signed, it’s called the John S. McCain National Defense Authorization Act. No mention of him by the president today,” he continued.

Tapper then pointed out Sen. McCain’s own statement, which did mention President Trump, as well as a Tweet from Cindy McCain praising her husband, both of which are included here.

He then offered the gratitude of himself and his show, in lieu of the President’s. “Since President Trump would not do it, let us here on The Lead congratulate Senator John McCain and his family and thank him for his service to the country,” he said.

On Twitter, the anchor also tweeted to Senator McCain’s wife Cindy and daughter Meghan McCain, offering his regret that they were slighted by Trump.
