Former FBI Director James Comey appeared with Conan O’Brien last night and addressed President Trump‘s claims of “SpyGate.”
“Clapper has now admitted that there was Spying in my campaign,” Trump tweeted yesterday. “Large dollars were paid to the Spy, far beyond normal. Starting to look like one of the biggest political scandals in U.S. history. SPYGATE – a terrible thing!”
Former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper has said Trump wildly misinterpreted his comments, and last night O’Brien asked Comey for his reaction.
“What the hell is he talking about?” O’Brien asked.
“It’s made up,” Comey responded. “I don’t know where he’s getting that from.”
He said the President keeps on claiming all sorts of things as bigger than Watergate and they rarely pan out, so he moves onto the next thing.
O’Brien asked Comey directly if it’s possible there was a spy on Trump’s campaign. Comey said, “I know it not to be true.”
The host also brought up the notion that Trump loves “chaos” and enjoys muddying the waters.
Comey said this in response:
“The attacks on the institutions of justice are just bad, whether you’re a Republican or a Democrat. So whatever the motivation is, it’s something the President of the United States shouldn’t do.”
Trump has also gone after Comey this week, tweeting, “Not surprisingly, the GREAT Men & Women of the FBI are starting to speak out against Comey, McCabe and all of the political corruption and poor leadership found within the top ranks of the FBI. Comey was a terrible and corrupt leader who inflicted great pain on the FBI!”
