JUST IN: Jake Sullivan Tells TODAY Russia Could Invade Ukraine In Hours

White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan called the likelihood of Russia invading Ukraine imminent enough that it could happen in “the coming hours or days.”

Sullivan spoke to NBC’s TODAY about the tense situation continuing to unfold on the Ukrainian border. As he spoke about sanctions and other countermeasures that will be taken if Russia attacks, Sullivan was asked about the potential for violence, particularly after the U.S. government claimed the Russians have a list of Ukrainian officials to be killed or sent to detention camps in the aftermath of an invasion.

Sullivan predicted the situation could get “extremely violent” with the number of military forces Russia has assembled on the Ukrainian border.

He continued:

We also have intelligence to suggest that there will be an even greater form of brutality because this will not simply be some conventional war between two armies. It will be a war waged by Russia on the Ukrainian people, to repress them, to crush them. to harm them, and that is what we laid out in detail for the U.N., because we believe that the world must mobilize to counter this kind of Russian aggression should those tanks roll across the border, as we anticipate they very well may do in the coming hours or days.

Though Sullivan was pessimistic about the chances for diplomacy at this point, he said the U.S. would “go the extra mile” to make it work. This comes shortly after White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki released a statement saying President Joe Biden has agreed “in principle” to a summit with Vladimir Putin as long as Russia doesn’t invade Ukraine.
