MSNBC’s Brian Williams: Kanye West Was a ‘Giant Shiny Object in the Oval Office Wearing a Red Hat’
On Thursday night, MSNBC anchor Brian Williams had a panel to discuss the wild meeting between Kanye West and President Donald Trump at the White House.
He echoed remarks made by CNN’s Don Lemon, who called Kanye West’s visit to the White House a “minstrel show” and that he was “embarrassing himself” and “allowing himself to be used” by the president, who in return is “exploiting a man who needs help.”
Former Congresswoman Donna Edwards (D-MD) said she “couldn’t agree with Don Lemon more,” telling Williams that Kanye West “wasn’t speaking for anyone but himself” and that his remarks “don’t even make sense.”
“I mean, what a side show that was at a time where loss of life is happening in Florida and the southern states, at a time where we have a journalist who is disappeared and likely murdered by the Saudi government,” Edwards said. “And here the president of the United States was entertaining Kanye and Kanye was entertaining him in the Oval Office.”
Williams then squeezed in some commentary of his own.
“This was a giant shiny object in the Oval Office wearing a red hat,” Williams told the panel.
Washington Post reporter Robert Costa later told the 11th Hour host about how he asked Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) his thoughts about the meeting as he was watching it on his cellphone on Capitol Hill, He told Costa that “reality meets reality television” and then shook his head and walked away.
