NBC Deletes Tweet Calling Oprah ‘OUR Future President,’ Issues Explanation
NBC has deleted a tweet sent out during Sunday night’s Golden Globes referring to Oprah Winfrey as “OUR future president.”
The tweet was issued after Seth Meyers cracked jokes in his monologue about the media titan’s presidential prospects — but before she delivered a rousing speech that brought down the house at the Globes and sparked a firestorm of 2020 speculation.
NBC’s reference to Oprah — in an apparent slight t0 President Donald Trump — was slammed by many as unprofessional, especially by conservatives.
And now, NBC has deleted the tweet and issued an explanation, claiming it was posted by “by a third party agency for NBC Entertainment in real time during the live broadcast” and “not meant to be a political statement”:
Yesterday a tweet about the Golden Globes and Oprah Winfrey was sent by a third party agency for NBC Entertainment in real time during the broadcast. It is in reference to a joke made during the monologue and not meant to be a political statement. We have since removed the tweet.
