Paris Dennard: CNN is ‘Peddling Lies’ That There Aren’t Blacks in Trump Admin
Despite the raft of criticism he regularly receives by the anti-Trump set, Paris Dennard is a cable news booking come true.
The loyal defender of Trump regularly goes on CNN to push back on what he — and pro-Trumpers — see as an unfair and untrue narrative put forth about the 45th president. Given the political role that race has played in this administration, Dennard presents a remarkably unique point of view: a man of color who defends President Donald Trump, often on issues of race. And this morning was no exception as he went there while appearing on CNN’s New Day.
Some context: this past weekend we saw something of a perfect storm of race-related stories related to the Trump administration: Former reality show contestant (turned senior presidential advisor) Omarosa Manigualt got a lot of attention while promoting here supposed tell-all book in which she alleged that President Donald Trump was “unhinged” on the one year anniversary of the deadly Charlottesville White Nationalist rally. So it makes sense that morning shows dedicated sufficient time to discuss Trump’s alleged “complicated” relationship with people of color.
So in a predictably fiery exchanged, Dennard was challenged to list people of color who worked in the Trump administration, and immediately (and quite impressively) listed a number of individuals off the top of his head to prove the point that there are in fact people of color in this White House.
But when he sensed he was being cut off because of time, he said “you want to wrap up the time because this is not important to you because you want to peddle the lies of Bakari Sellers and others saying that there aren’t blacks in this administration.”
The claim that CNN was “peddling lies” was met with a palpable wince from his fellow panellists John Avlon and Sellers, but honey badger don’t care, and neither did Dennard. Host Jon Berman quickly cleaned up this mess and tossed to commercial. But CNN viewers were likely left satisfied that they witnessed a cable news argument that reinforced their own pre-existing points of view. Everyone’s a winner.
