SNL Channels The Sopranos in Trumpian Cold Open Featuring Lurking Robert Mueller
The cold open of the season’s final episode of Saturday Night Live returned to a Trumpian theme tonight, featuring Alec Baldwin as Donald Trump, Kate McKinnon as Rudy Giuliani and Ben Stiller as Michael Cohen sitting in a New Jersey diner.
It all started with Trump walking into Holsten’s Restaurant in Bloomfield, New Jersey before asking waitress Heidi Gardner if “HGTV is different than HIV,” a likely reference to Bill Gates’ claims about Trump’s lack of HIV knowledge.
Then, the others started streaming in, including Mikey Day as Donald Trump Jr. and Alex Moffat as Eric Trump, who were there to celebrate “a great first year of the Russia investigation” but only after Eric parallel parked his child’s toy.
“Don’t worry, I told them that you were openly colluding with Russia but then I ended with, ‘So what!’” McKinnon’s Giuliani tells Trump, referring to his media blitz.
Stiller’s Cohen asks if Trump if he will visit him in jail, prompting SNL Trump to note he is busy with golf.
In the background, Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’,” plays, a nod to The Soprano’s finale.
Th real surprise, though came when Robert DeNiro walked in the diner as Robert Mueller, lingering in the background and clearly disturbing Baldwin’s Trump.
