Steve Doocy Confronts GOP Rep Over His Opposition to Border Bill: Are Border Patrol Union and CPB Chief Wrong?!
Steve Doocy pressed Republican Congressman Tom Emmer over his and the House GOP’s opposition to a bipartisan border bill despite the support from the Border Patrol Union and the CPB chief.
Rep. Emmer appeared on Fox & Friends Tuesday morning to discuss a looming impeachment vote of DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas despite a razor-thin margin in the majority and significant pushback from constitutional scholars like Jonathan Turley and Michael Chertoff.
At the end of his appearance, Doocy pressed Emmer on the controversial border bill that former President Donald Trump has led opposition to, leading many to question partisan political priorities over national security.
“Yesterday at this time, we were taking a look at the Senate proposal, bipartisan Senate bill to do something about migration and immigration,” Doocy said, “And I know a lot of Republicans are against it because Donald Trump is against it. But here’s the problem for you guys: the Border Patrol union came out, and the acting CBP chief both came out and said they’re not — it’s not perfect — but this is the best thing we’ve seen in decades.”
“So are Republicans going to say that the Border Patrol union and the acting CBP chief are wrong?’ Doocy asked.
“Well, look, they can have their perspective, Steve,” Emmer replied, to which Doocy interjected, “It’s their job, Tom!”
“Well, and it’s our job to actually make sure the laws will accomplish what we’re seeking to do,” Emmer pushed back. “You have to reform the parole process where the president has been abusing it, allowing people to come across the border. You have to reinstate remain in Mexico. You have to end, catch and release. And you have to reform our asylum laws. This so-called Senate deal only takes care of one thing.”
“They can have their opinion,” he concluded. “But this is what we got elected for, and we need to hold the administration accountable. It’s time to end this invasion at the southern border, Steve.”
The conservative editorial board at the Wall Street Journal recently published an essay condemning Republican opposition to what they effectively called the best border security bill in ages.
