Trump on N. Korea Military Action: They’re ‘Behaving Badly, And It’s Got to Stop’

During his press conference with Kuwait’s Amir al-Sabah, President Trump was asked about his administration’s goals pertaining to the latest threats from North Korea.

CBS’s Major Garrett asked Trump if war with North Korea is inevitable, and whether he’d require the rogue nation to undergo total denuclearization as a term for international peace. Garrett’s question comes after North Korea held a hydrogen bomb test in recent days, while making new provocative statements in spite of international pressure.

“Military action would certainly be an option. Is it inevitable? Nothing’s inevitable,” said Trump. “It would be great if something else could be worked out…I would prefer not going the route of the military, but it’s something certainly that could happen.”

Trump bashed his predecessors for 25 years of ineffectual diplomacy with North Korea, and he also said it will be a “very sad day for North Korea” if the United States uses military might against them. Garrett followed up by asking if Trump would tolerate an international scenario where North Korea is contained but not denuclearized.

“I’m not negotiating with you,” said Trump. “Maybe we’ll have a chance to negotiate with somebody else, but I don’t put my negotiations on the table, unlike past administrations. I don’t talk about them. But I can tell you that north Korea’s behaving badly, and it’s got to stop.”
