WATCH: John Brennan Questions if Trump Actually Stripped His Security Clearance
Former CIA Director John Brennan said on MSNBC that he doesn’t know whether President Donald Trump actually stripped his security clearance, and suggested that officials within the administration have resisted carrying out the order.
MSNBC’s Hallie Jackson asked Brennan about Trump’s threats to strip Justice Department official Bruce Ohr‘s security clearance, given the White House announcement that it was stripping Brennan of his.
“I don’t know,” Brennan replied. “The only thing I’ve heard about my security clearance from the government is when [White House press secretary] Sarah Huckabee Sanders said at the podium my clearance had been stripped.”
“I’ve not been contacted by anybody at all either before or since then. Whether or not my clearance has been stripped I’m still uncertain about. But she said it, she read something from Donald Trump.”
“In this current administration, process seems to be thrown out the door,” he said. “Because the process for revocation of clearance has very clear guidelines. So the Trump Administration did not follow the guidelines that they, in fact, affirmed last year, about how to deal with security clearance revocations.”
“Do you think they’re walking it back?” Jackson asked.
“I have no idea,” Brennan said, before suggesting that officials in the Trump administration have resisted the president’s efforts to strip his clearance:
“Given that I think everybody believes that the rational for stripping me of my clearance is bogus, I’m sure there are some people who are scratching their head right now, who are maybe having to put together the memorandum, to say why I was stripped of my clearances, other than the fact that Mr. Trump might not like me. Which is not a valid reason.”
“So I’m still waiting to here,” he said, “they have my contact information but I have not yet heard yet.”
