‘Whatever Trump Said Makes Absolutely No Sense’: Joy Reid Incredulous at Ex-President Comparing Self to Dead Dissident

Former President Donald Trump compared himself to deceased Russian dissident Alexei Navalny, prompting an incredulous reaction from MSNBC’s Joy Reid.

“Donald Trump has long suffered from delusions of grandeur,” she declared on Wednesday’s episode of The ReidOut. “When it comes to his mounting legal issues, he likes to portray himself as a martyr, a victim of political persecution. Just a few months ago, he was comparing himself to a truly historic figure.”

She aired a clip of Trump likening himself to Nelson Mandela.

“Nope, nope, nope, nope, nope,” Reid responded. “I could easily go into the countless ways that Trump is nothing like Mandela, but who has the time? And just last night, Trump made yet another inapt comparison.”

During a Fox News town hall on Tuesday, Trump called last week’s $354 million civil fraud judgment against him “a form of Navalny.”

The famous Russian opposition leader died in a Russian prison last week after being detained upon returning to the country in 2021. He had previously been poisoned, but survived.

“It is a form of Navalny. It is a form of communism or fascism,” Trump said. “Navalny was a very sad situation. And he’s very brave. He was a very brave guy… It’s a horrible thing, but it’s happening in our country, too. We are turning into a communist country in many ways.”

The leading presidential candidate is separately under criminal indictment in four jurisdictions.

“What in the gobbledygook?” Reid said, reacting to the clip. “Navalny’s death in a Russian prison was announced last week. He had been imprisoned since his return to Russia in January 2021 after surviving a near-fatal poisoning months earlier. Whatever Trump said makes absolutely no sense.”
