Marks and Spencer (M&S) issued an apology Thursday after posting an outtake from its Christmas advertisement on Instagram, which depicted festive hats in the colours of the Palestinian flag burning in a fireplace.

The apology and removal of the post came after online users noted the colours of the hats bore resemblance to the Palestinian flag, deeming it inappropriate amidst the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict. The image was captioned, “This Christmas, do what you love… like saying no to paper hats” and was tagged #LoveThismasNotThatmas.

M&S clarified that the outtake was recorded in August, predating the recent surprise attack on Israel by Hamas on October 7. The ongoing violence has resulted in significant casualties. The Gaza Health Ministry reports over 8,800 Palestinian deaths and 22,000 injuries as a result of the Israeli military campaign against Hamas and over 1,400 Israelis were killed during Hamas’s initial attack, along with 16 IDF soldiers killed since the ground operation began.

The retailer unveiled its main Christmas advert with a star-studded cast, urging viewers to focus on joy during the festive season. The campaign features celebrities like singer Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Emmy winner Hannah Waddingham, advising customers to prioritize self-enjoyment.
