Bill Clinton Calls Bernie Sanders ‘The Blame Candidate,’ Hillary ‘The Responsibility Candidate’

bill-3Things got nasty on the campaign trail Tuesday as former President Bill Clinton stumped for Hillary Clinton in Chicago, and made some harsh, probably ill-advised comments to reporters there. Asked why Hillary Clinton, who narrowly leads Bernie Sanders in the state, isn’t doing better than she is in Illinois, he appeared to blame the media, replying “I think you know the answer to that.”

But then, he appeared to draw a contrast with Sanders on an issue that’s not really a winner for Hillary in Illinois:

Reporter: Is Rahm a liability?

Clinton: There should be a race for president. There’s a blame candidate and a responsibility candidate in this race. I bet the responsibility candidate is going to win.

Sanders has made Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel‘s tenure, and in particular his handling of the Laquan McDonald murder, a campaign issue in Chicago, while Hillary has remained largely supportive of Emanuel as she’s called on him to enact reforms. Hillary may or may not win in Illinois, but if Rahm Emanuel is the issue, I’d take Bubba’s bet in a hot second.
