Anti-Abortion Activist Barred from Entering Australia
Troy Newman, a prominent American anti-abortion activist, has been barred from entering Australia because of his past inflammatory rhetoric on the subject.
Newman is the president of Operation Rescue and one of the board members for the Center for Medical Progress––the group that released those disturbing and now-infamous Planned Parenthood videos––and he was informed yesterday on his way to speak in Melbourne that he has been barred from entering Australia.
Australian politicians had called for Newman to be barred from entry because of past comments he made about violence against abortion providers and concerns that his “repugnant” views would “incite discord within the community and disrupt the ability of women to access lawful reproductive medicine.”
Well, Australia’s immigration minister decided to cancel his visa as a result.
Newman posted on Facebook about being stopped at the airport––he says he was stopped on a flight that was going from Denver to Los Angeles, not to Australia––and said, “It is clear that the pro-abortion crowd does not want anyone to hear the truth about Planned Parenthood’s illegal actions.” And Operation Rescue posted a defense of Newman on its website:
Terri Butler, MP sent a letter to Minister of Immigration Peter Dutton falsely accusing Newman of advocating the execution of abortion providers. She quoted from a book co-written by Newman called Their Blood Cries Out in a way that was completely out of context and twisted the meaning of a theological argument Newman was trying to explain.
Newman has never advocated violence against abortion providers or facilities and has instead aggressively encouraged pro-life activists to work through the legal, legislative, and justice systems to bring abortionists who are breaking the law and harming women to justice.
