Awkward! CNN’s Sanchez Grills GOP Sen. Ensign On His Affair

sanchez_ensignWow. This year — and this decade — will just not go quietly. Will this be the final viral clip of the decade or will someone drag Mark Sanford or John Edwards in front of the camera before the day is through? Senator John Ensign apparently thought he was going on CNN to talk about terrorism — until Rick Sanchez switched topics began asking him about the ethics scandal he’s now embroiled in, thanks to his affair with the wife of one of his top staffers, and ethics allegations around a lobbying gig he may have subsequently gotten for the cuckolded husband. THIS YEAR HAS BEEN SO WEIRD.

It seems a safe bet that Ensign wasn’t expecting this. Watch below:

Nice, Ensign was NAILED in that interview….good luck squirming out of this one.

  • puck30

Didn’t CNN claim that they were not going to do this stuff and they were going to be a more straight news channel?

MSNBC & FNC be damned! I wonder what Klein would say about this?

Nice catch & a Happy New year Rachel.

BTW: what’s up with that van being left in Times Square for two days? Yikes!

And to think, CNN is giving Rick TWO hours starting in Jan 2010! Laugh riot that CNN thinks this is “real journalism” and will improve their ratings! HA! Rick would never ask these questions of a democrat. CNN sucks and this kind of hit job on someone who agreed to come on air to talk issues just demonstrates that CNN doesn’t have a clue.

    Happy New Year All.

  • JunkJunk

Nice job, Rick! Now THAT’S journalism. Ensign is a worm.

  • personwhomakescomments

LOL of COURSE TinafromTampa – if this was a democrat, then suddenly you’d be fingering yourself in pleasure and exclaiming how Rick Sanchez did a great job.
Give me a break…you’re SO predictable, it’s not even funny.

  • TfT

Hey person, I posted a comment over at TVNewser, why not take your attack over there, rather than here.

PS: Rick Sanchez never does a great job, exceptt of course if he is running over someone.

  • Zakk

    Rick Sanchez, journalistic integrity.
Remember when he invited the list of people below on and then went after them:

    Senator Christopher Dodd
    Rep. Barney Frank
    Secretary of Treasury Timothy Geithner
    Attorney General Eric Holder
    Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr.
    Senator Roland Burris
    Rep. Nancy Pelosi
    Rep. John Murtha
    Rep. Charles Rangel

So, NO ONE can say that Sanchez is a bias hack. Stay classy Sanchez, stay classy.

  • m

Nah, as long as you never go after Republicans that’s the only way you can be truly “unbiased” and “fair” according to right wingers.

  • ChrisNH

That still-photo of Sanchez is pure mint. ‘TV News Hack Feigns Exasperation. Film at Eleven.’

  • ChrisNH

Sorry…I forgot a couple important words: ‘‘BIG and FAMOUS TV News Hack Feigns Exasperation. Film at Eleven.’

I personally think watching a weasel like Ensign grilled like this is great fun, but in reality it depends on who is doing the grilling. As the old saying goes…you can’t come to court with dirty hands….the dirty hands in this case belong to Rick Sanchez..

For viewers from Miami who have known Sanchez for much too long….we have watched his off camera “antics” for many years. Watching Sanchez question anyone about their ethics is laughable. The fact that Sanchez, while driving drunk, ran Jeffrey Smuzinick down and left him for dead in the street, is widely known. The fact that several years before that incident, Sanchez lost his TV gig in Miami because he was caught on police audio tape trading favors with Miami’s “Great Corrupter” Alberto San Pedro is also in our collective memory banks. Rick Sanchez was banished from Miami TV for many years after this all was made public.

So again….grilling Ensign is great TV, but maybe CNN should question who is firing up the grill.

  • RazorsEdge

Sanchez and Ensign both do awkward well! Seem to take Sanchez some seconds to rev up the gumption motor at the beginning of the interview to dive into the questions.

Seemed pretty legit to get into that subject and line of questioning with Ensign. Sanchez a news anchor (he says he’s a journalist, but not sure he studied journalism) and Ensign a public figure in the news.

That’s what should happen when news meets public figure that are in the news. Not because of alleged marital affair but because of alleged marital affair hush money and favors by a Senator.

Because it’s ‘Ensign’ is irrelevant. Because it’s allegations on a sitting US Senator. Getting into the questions should not matter if you thought Ensign a ‘worm’ or a ‘hero’. It’s not a republican vs democrat or cnn vs. fox thing.

Same news anchor treatment should occur for Sen. McConnell, Rep. Murtha or Rep Rangel if they showed up on air.

  • roxsteady

See, this is what real journalism looks like. Many of you don’t recognize it when you see it because you watch fox. I’m not sure what Ensign expected. Perhaps more of the kind of treatment he gets at fox but, when you have a scandal hanging over your head and are invited on to speak about something you have no clue about, you should have been prepared. What the hell does Ensign know about national security and terrorism? He’s not on any of the related committees. He got exactly what Cheney should have from those stenographers over at the politico. A critical assesment of his qualifications to speak on any subject given his current situation. Shoot the messenger but, Ensign is a slime ball and a weasel. The only people who come off looking worse are his parents. Real Class! Or, perhaps Rick saw Rachel Maddow’s show on Wednesday night where she called out the press for their lack of critical reporting. It was spot on.

I’m not sure what Ensign expected.

Probably to talk about terrorism… that is, until Sanchez decided to “change the subject.”

Now, I have no patience for Ensign or anyone else using their political position as a platform to meet women… so no love lost here. However, to “change the subject” on a guest like that is inappropriate.

Further more, folks like roxy like to say what would happen on FOX, although they never watch it. They’d also change their tune (and have) when FOX does a pressing interview of someone on “their side,” all of a sudden then, it’s un-fair. So the new year is only a few hours old and we have our first bit of television/political drama… and the first bit of unsurprising hypocrisy from the “usual suspects” on Mediaite.
