CNBC’s Steve Liesman Tells Rick Santelli: “You Were Wrong About Everything”

CNBC is no longer just “first in business worldwide,” as their tag line states, it is also the place to see on-air dust-ups between correspondent’s and anchors. Back in December we noted an on-air kerfuffle between host Steve Liesman and reporter Rick Santelli in which Santellit told his host “You don’t say anything I find interesting.” This morning viewers of the financial news channel bore witness to another tiff between the squabbling CNBCers.

Some have wisely surmised that the increased tension at CNBC’s studios might stem from Charles Gasparino‘s departure to rival Fox Business Network (and the pursuant big stories he broke shortly after.)

Transcript of their exchange (via TV Newser):

Liesman: Rick, you’ve lost enough people enough money by now.

Santelli: Why don’t we put that to a referendum. Let’s put it on our website right now. Who lost you more money, Steve Liesman or Rick Santelli. Put your money where your mouth is.

Liesman: Rick you argued interest rates would be higher, you argued for the crash of the dollar, Rick. Rick, you had everything wrong, Rick. There wasn’t a single thing you had right.

Santelli: Jobs, jobs, jobs. I talked about the credit crisis.

Liesman: You were wrong… you said the credit crisis was nothing. I’ll pull the tapes.

Santelli: Okay. You pull the tapes Steve Liesman.

Liesman: You were wrong about everything.

And here is the clash from late last year:

Santelli’s schtick is old. Nobody’s listening anymore. Stop yelling nonsense.

Becky: “Are you arguing against the market?” (Fold arms and wonder about Rick’s future)

And, Santelli’s record as a forecaster is, at best, mixed.

Anything that, by extension, reflects negatively on the NBC brand and on GE, I’m for.

I used to watch CNBC until it became blatantly obvious that absolutely no one on that entire channel had a clue what they were talking about. Nothing but guessing and contradictions.

I think Liesman is a shill for the Fed. If you watch the whole exchange, not just what is written in the print (edited version) you can see Liesman attacked Santelli for no reason. Looked like Liesman planned it .I mean who want to lose our AAA rating? Who wants to pay more for our debt? After today when healthcare passes enjoy the ride, just make sure you’ve put enough money away. The time to pay for all these entitlement programs is a heartbeat away. I’m sure many will say how did this happen? Santelli said if we don’t address the debt over a year ago, that we could lose our AAA rating, LIESman laughed. Rick was right, and LIesman used the only trick left in his bag personal attacked. Then blogs like this astroturf edited version to mislead. What next the race card, oh yea, that was last week. Santelli was right about Fannie and Freddie too! Nice little Christmas Eve. present they gave themselves with our money. You know the unlimited resources to F/F the same institution that started the housing crisis. Wake-up, your ignorance is no excuse anymore. Why did the WSJ fire Liesman again? I found that VERY interesting, you might too! HA!
