Congressman Guestimates How Many of His Fellow Reps Smoke Weed
At a National Cannabis Industry Association on Capitol Hill Thursday, Representative Jared Polis (D-CO) guestimated 5-10% of congressional members smoke weed.
“I don’t think more than five or ten, I would guess,” Polis said. “But, I really wouldn’t know because I haven’t seen them use it. I would just be completely guessing.”
Polis is a vocal proponent of marijuana legalization, but said his guess was based more on demographics and averages than any suspicion that Reps are sneaking joints between votes.
“I think the average age is 60,” Polis said. “People like members of Congress aren’t different. They’re actually pretty normal…So I don’t know what percentage of sixty-year-olds use marijuana, but it’s probably pretty similar in Congress. So if it’s 5% of sixty-year-olds, than it’s probably 5% of Congress.”
