Jennifer Rexford, who worked cleaning the mess left by the BP oil spill, has documented the impact the spill has had on her body by filming her deterioration and her attempts to seek medical help.

Rexford says she has since lost feeling in one arm and experiences facial spasms, in addition to other medical issues. Doctors have told her, she says, that she is experiencing various neurological issues.

In this video, Rexford introduces viewers to her video project:

Here, Rexford discusses her medical problems after visiting an afflicted friend:

And, here, Rexford attempts to to determine whether her medical issues will be covered under the “Oil Pollution Act:”

She goes into greater detail about her issues in this video, which she warns may be too graphic for some viewers.

Buzzfeed offers greater context, offering this news report about others who have suffered health issues since having been exposed not only to the leaked crude oil, but also the chemicals used to clean it. The report also tackles the question of whether eating seafood that has come into contact with the spilled oil is hazardous (Answer: No.) Loss of feeling in limbs, nosebleeds and seizures seem to be symptoms experienced among many who have come into contact with the oil:

Update: According to ShortFormBlog, Rexford is recommending that those interested in offering her – and others like her – help should consider making a donation Seattle’s Climate Change Relocation Center.

She was cautioned on numerous occasions for failure to wear the personal protective equipment provided by her employer–a sub contractor–after OSHA made the employer aware of her failure in doing so. The employer was given a warning by OSHA to that effect Her complaint was that it was too hot to wear, but other workers expressed no problems to that effect. Her injuries are self-inflicted but the employer is STILL on the hook for providing her medical treatment.
