Hilarious: Blog Collects Ramblings Of People Mistaking The Onion For Real News

There’s something about Memorial Day that kind of gets me down. Perhaps it’s the fact that I’m spending the entire weekend reflecting on people who risked and sacrificed their very lives for the good of the country and the most exciting thing I did this week was go to a pretty good improv class. That’s why it’s weekends like these where I need something to remind myself that there are people more pathetic than me. Enter the tumblr Literally Unbelievable which has been going viral all morning! It’s a collection of Facebook postings from people who can’t tell that The Onion isn’t a real news source. I can feel my self confidence rising already!

Yes, there are people out there who read headlines like “Planned Parenthood Opens $8 Billion Abortionplex” and “Final Minutes Of Last Harry Potter Movie To Be Split Into Seven Separate Films” and don’t instantly think, “Hey, that’s a funny joke.” Instead they think, “Hey, I better get on Facebook and register my outrage!”

Just check out this sample:

Of course, it’s really more fun when actual news agencies get fooled by The Onion because, with this blog, we’re really just making fun of regular people who haven’t done anything worse than being incredibly gullible. And what does that say about us. I mean, what kind of person sits in his apartment mocking strangers for making an honest mistake? That doesn’t make me smart! That makes me a jerk! Just a mean bully who-

Uh oh! Self confidence dipping again! Gotta find another happy Tumblr!

Ah ha! Dogs Eating Pasta! Awwwwwww!

I’ve never found the Onion funny, but I do find people showing their stupidity by treating the Onion as real news funny. FoxNation once had one of their inflammatory headlines based on an Onion article. Of course, their insect-brained followers believed it without questioning.

The Onion is a waste, but at least it’s a source that can be traced back to when some silly urban legend type stories go viral. Speaking of viral, I’ll include this “Unbelievable” story in the Fluff and Nonsense section of my chain-smashing site.

This area woman loves The Onion.

I find it very disturbing that there can be so many who are not able to discriminate real news from the likes of the Onion, Colbert and Stewart, yet won’t pay attention to real news. The scary part is that these people vote without the slightest knowledge of what’s going on in the world.

I absolutely agree with you. I have friends who don’t know hardly anything about what’s going on. Their attitude is “meh”. I

There are still old people who believe chain letters and spam e-mail.

    Really? There are these gems:
    http://www.theonion.com/articles/halliburton-given-contract-to-rebuild-cheney,5031/
    http://www.theonion.com/articles/bill-of-rights-pared-down-to-a-manageable-six,15/

You have to admit, they’ve got some great stuff in their store…
    http://store.theonion.com/product/black-guy-asks-nation-for-change-magnet,164/
    http://store.theonion.com/product/free-thinking-cat-shits-outside-the-box-magnet,209/

What this highlights is how stupid some of our people are. Most Onion headlines/stories are blatatnly, obviously, untrue (see two links posted above). And like others have said, if you cannot understand the satire/nuance of TDS or Colbert or the Onion…oy. Sad times.

    To PUBLIUS,

I wasn’t finished with our previous dialogue, or, perhaps, you simply conceded and went away?

Interesting choice of ‘Nom de Plume’: “PUBLIUS”. There was was Roman General named Publius Varus. He was defeated and lost 2 Legions in the Battle of the Teutoborg Forest.

    Do you play chess?
