‘His Scalp Might Be Good For Free Speech’: Twitter Reacts to Maher Dropping the N-Word

Last night, HBO host Bill Maher caused immediate outrage when he tossed out the N-word during his Real Time interview with Sen. Ben Sasse (R-NE). After Sasse quipped that he should have Maher work in the fields, the comedian responded by saying he was a “house nigga.” The audience responded with a mixture of shock and laughter.
Of course, with an older white male using the N-word — even in a mocking and joking manner — it was clear there was going to be a lot of reaction. And much of it was going to be on the side of fury, anger and disgust, with calls for Maher to be fired.
And, following last night’s broadcast, that is what we saw on Twitter.
Journalist Yashar Ali took issue with the fact that some in the audience applauded while Sasse laughed off the comment:
Bill Maher just said the n word, @BenSasse didn't look horrified, and the audience applauded. pic.twitter.com/kFAs1S3dyM

Meanwhile, we got a countertweet to Sasse getting pulled into the fire from Ben Howe:
Bill Maher says the N-word on his show and the left is firing at Ben Sasse (who he was interviewing). That fits.

There were those that called out Maher for his bigotry, some pointing out his previous statements on Muslims to further their point:
if you excuse bill maher's racism and islamophobia because he rips trump regularly, you're not any better than hannity shilling for trump
— Oliver Willis (@owillis) June 3, 2017
People shocked at Bill Maher being racist-y, check w your Arab & Muslim friends. Been doing this for a LONG time, but he got hall passes.
— Wajahat Ali (@WajahatAli) June 3, 2017
I can't believe Bill Maher said something racist, said no Muslim ever. #realtime
— Reza Aslan (@rezaaslan) June 3, 2017
Other noted that this is sort of Maher MO — saying outrageous things to get attention:
Bill Maher says N word on his show last night – why? Because like Ann Coulter he says hateful crap to get press so he can stay on TV
— (((DeanObeidallah))) (@Deanofcomedy) June 3, 2017
I feel like Bill Maher says one awful thing in each show intentionally because that's the only way people actually shares any clips from it.
— Chris Geidner (@chrisgeidner) June 3, 2017
You had the inevitable comparisons made between Maher and Kathy Griffin:
Bill Maher, not a racist.
Kathy Griffin, not a victim.
— Joe Walsh (@WalshFreedom) June 3, 2017
*looks at twitter* ah i see bill maher was upset that kathy griffin was getting all the attention
— andy levy (@andylevy) June 3, 2017
Firmly in the Never Ever Ever Ever Helping category:
—Kathy Griffin
—Lena Dunham
—Bill Maher— Andrew Kirell (@AndrewKirell) June 3, 2017
Waiting for Bill Maher to say Ben Sasse broke him.
— Razor (@hale_razor) June 3, 2017
Part of Trumps winning strategy is to force his opponents into fatal errors reacting to him. Kathy Griffin and Bill Maher examples of this.
— Bill Mitchell (@mitchellvii) June 3, 2017
There were some that wanted it to be known that they always thought Maher was bad:
I'm upset that Bill Maher has a show, but only because so many people have kept watching him after he's shown his bigoted ass over & over
— Ijeoma Oluo (@IjeomaOluo) June 3, 2017
At least everyone can agree that nobody actually likes Bill Maher
— Peter J. Hasson (@peterjhasson) June 3, 2017
Bill Maher is bad and has always been bad and I got the tweets to prove what time i got to this party pic.twitter.com/ogpOeO07K4
— Ben Dreyfuss (@bendreyfuss) June 3, 2017
If I weren't already totally done with Bill Maher I might be upset about him casually throwing the N word around.
— Charles Johnson (@Green_Footballs) June 3, 2017
(Bill Maher has always been bad)
— Tim Dotcom (@timothypmurphy) June 3, 2017
Your time on earth is finite and infinitely precious, a flicker in a dark universe. Any moment spent thinking about Bill Maher is wasted.
— Jeet Heer (@HeerJeet) June 3, 2017
And then we had this reaction from Slate’s Jamelle Bouie:
Me after watching that clip of Bill Maher pic.twitter.com/y099nvBsp0
— Jamelle Bouie (@jbouie) June 3, 2017
As well as this one from Matthew Cherry:
I support Bill Maher being fired because they need to suffer a little under their own bullshit rules to save the old, principled ones.
— Kurt Schlichter (@KurtSchlichter) June 3, 2017
Also, some on the right just want Maher fired not because they were offended, but just to send a message to the left:
Never said Bill Maher should be fired.
That said, his scalp might be good for free speech.
Means no one is safe unless the left chills.
