Joe Biden Apologized To Obama For Forcing His Hand In Gay Marriage Issue
Following President Barack Obama‘s voicing his support for same-sex marriage, many speculated that Vice President Joe Biden‘s endorsement of marriage equality over the weekend directly led to the president’s announcement. On Thursday, we learned that Obama had planned to make the announcement regardless, but that Biden expedited the process. Biden has since apologized to the president, according to The New York Times.
As you’ll recall, Biden said on Sunday that he is “absolutely comfortable” with same-sex marriage, which sparked a frenzy about Obama’s “evolution” on the issue. Obama said Biden was “a little bit over his skis,” but that meant well.
Mr. Biden has said nothing publicly since his remarks on the NBC program “Meet the Press.” But he has told staff members at the White House that he regrets putting the president in an awkward spot, several officials said. These officials declined to characterize his precise remarks to Mr. Obama, or Mr. Obama’s response.
Obama had, in fact, planned to make the announcement as early as Monday — but “in the wake of Mr. Biden’s interview, the president’s aides hastily scheduled an interview Wednesday with Robin Roberts of ABC News.”
