NBC News Confirms One Herman Cain Harassment Accuser Received Cash Settlement

In an interview with Herman Cain campaign manager Mark Block this morning, The Daily Rundown’s Chuck Todd alluded to the fact that his organization was working on confirming elements of the Politico sexual harassment story. Now, NBC News is reporting that they have confirmed that one of Cain’s accusers did, in fact, receive a cash settlement.

From MSNBC’s First Read blog:

NBC News has confirmed that one woman received a settlement from the National Restaurant Association after complaining about inappropriate sexual conduct by Herman Cain.

NBC News is not disclosing the name of the woman nor characterizing who she is.

As the story unfolds, Cain’s camp has shifted from evasion to offense, as Cain has been offering vehement denials of wrongdoing, while insisting he knew nothing about any settlements.

Oh boy. Looks like we have yet another RepubliCON pervert on our hands.
I hope I see you Anthony Weiner critics squealing for his head.

This will be the end of Herman Cain!!

Republicans don’t know right from wrong, so this will not affect Cain’s candidacy.

You have to understand that Republicans literally don’t understand the difference between consensual sex and sexual harassment.  If you don’t believe me, just ask one.

  • Anonymous

lmao…….no spinning today? lol………..cat (or pussy, regarding the sitaution) got your tongue?

  • Anonymous

A cash settlement in this context is not good for an aspiring politician, regardless of his/her political affiliations.

If it’s confirmed by other sources, then this may create very big problems. It won’t go away by itself.

People will pose the question of ‘why pay a settlement if you are innocent?’

  • Anonymous

No offense, but the business community knows that it’s better to offer a cash settlement to say “We know he didn’t do this, but the visuals of a trial would be bad so we’ll offer you this cash money to leave this job and to drop this case.” Simple as that.

Litigation is tedious. And this is a case that could’ve had bigger media appeal so it was better to brush it under the rug. I think that this was a non-case that the NRA lawyers just wanted to make go away and so this is the easiest plan of action.

I expect this all to be a non-issue.

  • Anonymous

Why pay a settlement if you’re innocent and as head of the National Restaurant Association how could he not have known about a settlement?

  • Anonymous

    Especially since his denial.
    Should have listened to Rove.

  • Anonymous

    You spelled it wrong.

  • Anonymous

    Good luck.
Lib does it, he’s a perv.
(R)egressive does it, it is the Corrupt Librul Medias fault

  • Anonymous

I think it’s worth noting that Cain served as both CEO and Chairman of the National Restaurant Association.

So when he says he didn’t know what “they” did with respect to cash settlements, he’s effectively saying he doesn’t know what HE did with respect to cash settlements.

Either that or he’s saying he was a horrible CEO and Chairman.

  • Anonymous

He’s denying just like Weiner did at first, give it two weeks and he’ll be admitting the women were paid but not because he was guilty but just to make it go away.

  • Anonymous

Because the visuals of a trial are worse business-wise in some cases than just paying someone to go away.

Were the individuals that sued, employees that then left the company after the settlement? If so, then I think that’s the case.

This could essentially just a be a buy-out contract of sorts.

  • Anonymous

    This is a fair criticism.

However, if we applied this same logic, then Obama lost us at least $535,000,000. And if that’s the case, I would rather have a person that paid out a cash settlement for a silly case versus someone that lost billions of dollars.

It’s also worth noting that Obama attended a church led by Jeremiah Wright so he’s effectively saying that….well you can finish the rest. (The only difference is that there is not an NDA involved.)

I think there’s a lot of hyper-speculation that is unwarranted so I find all of the hyperventilating hilarious. Cain was never going to be the Presidential candidate.

  • Anonymous

Sadly, none of these facts are likely to penetrate the craniums of Cain’s supporters. They’ll reflexively assume that any and all negative stories are naturally evidence of liberal media bias. If they weren’t put off by his ignorance about foreign affairs, his murkiness about abortion rights or the completely unworkable math behind 999 plan, this ain’t going to do it either. These people are beyond reach.

  • Anonymous

    Tea partiers:  Please elect him!

The layers of approval that Solyndra required — over not one, but TWO administrations — was extraordinary. Furthermore, the failure of betting on the wrong alt energy company was at least in pursuit of a worthwhile goal. Not so much in the case of burying (alleged) harassment charges.

  • Anonymous

It does happen. Some people pay these things to go away because litigation is too costly and time-consuming. But the campaign’s explanations have trickled out in such a painfully awkward way that they’ve brought a lot more suspicions on themselves than they ever would have had they issued a clear story at the beginning. They had ten days to formulate an answer. They failed.

  • Anonymous

Possibly, had this been just one case of alleged ‘he said, she said sexual harassment.’

…But, people are suggesting more than one!

He’s not a celebrity, he’s an aspiring politician aiming for the Presidency.

  • Texan

Must be why the cash is rooooolling in!

  • Texan

CASH SETTLEMENTS are really a bugger to explain…

Must be why bj forked over $850,000, right?

  • Anonymous

I think your math is a little off there.

  • Anonymous

It’s true that this does happen a lot. But their denials have collapsed like a cheap camera. They had ten days to formulate an answer that made sense, but chose this route. It smells very bad.

  • Texan

Paula Jones agreed to drop her sexual harassment lawsuit against
President Clinton on Nov. 13 in return for $850,000

  • Hang_the_DJ

It might be a non-issue in the business world but in a the campaign for President it is a big deal. It’ll follow him through the primary and will probably cost him support from family-values voters, possibly women’s groups etc.
It wont kill his campaign, but it will do some damage.

  • Anonymous

No- this makes it look like he was  Democrat in the’90s.

Too bad he didn’t send out “dick shots” ; he would get your vote and the Dem vote!

  • Rick Patel

So, none of these women have names or identities? Zipper Bubba’s victims were real people: Monica Lewinsky, Paula Jones, Gennifer Flowers, Kathleen Willey; but in today’s Politico/McGinniss era of “journalism”, any figment, any hologram will do.

  • Anonymous

Herman- send out dick shots and get the Dem votes as well!

    LOL

  • Michelle

What are their names?  Why are they being withheld?  Is the corrupt, liberal media afraid they won’t be able to stand up to scrutiny?   When a woman accuses a liberal, their life is torn apart, but here we aren’t even allowed to know who the accuser is.  Seems a little odd.

  • Hang_the_DJ

So your theory is because their names haven’t been released it’s a devious conspiracy created by the liberal media to take Cain out of the primary for…some reason…?

I guess Mr. Cain will be getting his next pizza to go.

  • Anonymous

Legally, they have to be I believe. If either of the two (if both received monies) spoke out, they would have to rescind all monies to the trust or firm (depending how things were set up).

I don’t think Cain is clean. I don’t think Politico is clean – they’re never clean. And I don’t think the Perry campaign is clean. Thankfully, neither Cain nor Perry, is “my guy”. :)

Smile – the Dems will have NO ONE to run after 2012. That is the saving grace. Otherwise, I think all the politicians are bad this go around.

  • Irish189

    you summed it up nicely

Its not a matter of right and wrong, sometimes its a matter of how fast you can make it disappear regardless if your guilty or not

applying this to Cain its usually quicker to pay off the accuser then it is to prove your innocence because contrary to what people may think about politicians, not all publicity is good, this would be damaging to his campaign and in todays ultra media hype would prob single handily bring it down
Under different circumstances he might have gone to court but hes a very public figure at the moment whose riding a high in polls, can’t afford to be side tracked by a trial

I agree and it is settled.  President Obama and his AG are directly responsible for the deaths of the border agents, and any one else who died, as a result of “Fast and Furious” and President Obama is responsible for the irresponsible “green loans.”  Now, we know these aforementioned series of events happened.  Where is the proof that the pay-offs were made in the allegaions against Candidate Cain?  Is Dan Rather the NBCer who is saying he has the evidence?

Two stories now, and none of which even HINTS at what was deemed ‘inappropriate’ or sexual behavior.   I am sure if this was Barack Obama, the media would be fuming that it’s racist since the sources aren’t identified, even the conduct itself is not identified.  What is alleged?  What are the sources?   Unnamed, unknown.  Try fighting that…

Media folks really think voters are stupid, don’t they.  Obama was a cocaine user, my guess is a bunch of dirt was available on his background.   No need to make it up.

Go, Cain, go.  The establishment and the media is after you…  Bill Clinton had lots of bad behavior, but I’d take his presidency over the failed Obama presidency any time!

  • Anonymous

Quite the opposite.  Remember Bill Clinton.  He had a massive ‘bimbo’ problem, this is NOTHING by comparison.   Unnamed sources, unknown details.  In fact, his campaign money will go up as many of us don’t trust the established parties and don’t trust the media.

As Clinton said, it’s the economy stupid…

What are you talking about, the Bush administration accepted the application, the actuaries that looked at the loan not only told the Obama administration that the loan was ill advised, but they also predicted the exact month and year that Solyndra would go bankrupt.  It seems to me that the analysis was very accurate and clear, the administration simply did not care, what’s a half of billion dollars, the photo op will be incredible, and it’s not our money anyway plus we can always print more…..

More over Solyndra will just be the first of many as the whole program was poorly managed as it was considered a pet project of this administration so reason and sound investing principles were thrown out the window. Here we have the $100,000 electric car that will only go some 32 miles on it’s batteries before it converts itself into a gas hog…. now they have only been able to deliver 2 of those cars in 2 years… how long before they go out. Behind that we have a second solar company that is really iffy… The list goes on… buy your popcorn now and just sit back, the show is about to begin.

Get over your sanctimonious self, you dems never got rid of Kennedy.  I am not trying to defend Cain, he is not going to make it anyway and this should be enough to reverse his so far good fortune.  I will point out to you however that yours is the party that never skipped a beat in returning Teddy Kennedy to office after he murdered that young woman in the Chappaquiddick river.  Not only did you return him to the Senate but your party has consistently hailed him as one of the great legislators of our times.

The kid that grew up across the street from us was a really sweet super-nice kinda nature loving child.  He had never been in any trouble what so ever and was engaged to be married to a nice young woman.  He had a drink or two to many and got behind the wheel of a car… he is now serving a 22 year term in prison, it was his first and only offense but it is what it is as manslaughter is considered murder without intent.

So say what you will about republicans overlooking this incident with Cain, it remains to be seen as this story is young and we don’t know the actual facts, but I can see Cain dropping in the poles and eventually writhing and dropping from the vine…  as you sit and squeal about the moral corruptness of his republican supporters…  I need only to point to history to show you the moral corruptness of you and your democratic brethren…  Oh! but no one can be holier than thou as you are a democrat, that alone speaks to your purity of soul! ROFLMAO

  • Michelle

The past tells us that’s absolutely the truth.  I think we all remember the “bimbo eruptions” of the Clinton era.  The liberals did their best to destroy those woman, while protecting the serial abuser of women/rapist.

  • Anonymous

    Absofuckinglutely.

Every scandal has its own dynamic and its own set of features that make it attractive to the media. The press went light on Republicans Vitter and Ensign (who kept their jobs), but gave 24-hour blanket coverage to Democrats Eliot Spitzer and Anthony Weiner (who lost their jobs). Why? A lot of reasons, none of which had to do with their political leanings.

You really want to believe this whole liberal media fantasy, Michelle, but unfortunately, the facts just don’t play along.

  • Michelle

They you are a delusional moron who isn’t worth my time.

  • Anonymous

As I answered you in another thread, why don’t we ask David Vitter and John Ensign (both R’s who kept their jobs) if they got the same 24-hour blanket media attention as Eliot Spitzer and Anthony Weiner (both D’s who lost theirs)? The answer: they didn’t. The media went light on them, in spite of their serious transgressions — and in spite of their obvious conservative leanings.

Every scandal has its own dynamic and it has little or nothing to do with whether someone’s got an R or a D by their name. We all know you want desperately to cling to this notion that there’s this big bad libruhl media out to destroy conservatives, but unfortunately for you, the facts just don’t play along.

    Cain talking to Greta:

    Van
Susteren asked what Cain did that led to the accusation. There were
reportedly more than one accusations in the complaint, but Cain said he
recalled just one incident. “She was in my office one day, and I made a
gesture saying — and I was standing close to her — and I made a gesture
saying you are the same height as my wife. And I brought my hand up to
my chin saying, ‘My wife comes up to my chin.’” At that point, Cain
gestured with his flattened palm near his chin. “And that was put in
there [the complaint] as something that made her uncomfortable,” Cain
said, “something that was in the sexual harassment charge.”

If this is the extent of this story, Politico will look very bad.

I’ve read that the payments to these women were severance packages and not “cash payments” to settle any claim.  I guess you can correctly characterize them as “cash payments” but it is misleading when you unequivocally state it was a settlement payment. I’ve seen several women make discrimination claims when getting ousted.  Was this a case of “hostile environment” discrimination (like poor Anita Hill having to listen to all that talk about Long Dong Silver) or quid pro quo discrimination (“Bone me or you don’t get promoted”)?  All we get is a little bald allegation that smears Cain.  Keep telling us why we have to vote for Obama, Tommy.  That is what you are paid to do.

I like your analysis here.  Vitter came forward immediately and had not catted around that much in comparison to the others.  Ensign really got off light.  He paid hush money through a third party (his parents).  And he was screwing his best friend’s wife.  Spitzer was way overboard in comparison to the others, yet strangely, I like him on TV.  But I tend to buy into the idea of a liberal slant to the political news.  Look how deep they dug for this “news” and how very little Obama was vetted.  One term state senator gets serendipitously into the US Senate and immediately announces he is running for President.  Had he been a conservative, the mainstream media would be birthers.

Hey! Who knew that the person at Mediaite who is most intent on further racializing Herman Cain as a sex crazed Black Man would be Tommy “Southern Strategy” Christopher!
    Shocker!

Isn’t being a ‘paid loon’ preferable to being an unpaid loon, like yourself?

I’m sorry that you’re so upset that Herman turns out to be imperfect, although he is perfectly ridiculous, especially on abortion, but, hey, you’ve got to face the truth sometime.

And when did you come to believe that anyone takes you seriously as a political prognosticator?
Try to stay in the here and now. I know it’s more fun to time travel, but this way you’ll do better at your sanity hearing.

So will the Restaurant Organization for paying her off with a five figure settlement.

  • shonangreg

I don’t think that makes any sense, Trevor. Republican elites are more likely to view laws as mere inconveniences (“Abortion should be illegal in all case, but women make the choice on whether or not to break the law” (Herman Cain)), but that is about it, as far as I can see. Some of my conservative/Republican friends (sometimes it is hard to tell the difference) are well-balanced when it comes to morals and sex — and resolute in their convictions. Harassing a woman is just something they’d never do.

Cain is Cain, and he should blame himself, not conservatism, his board of directors, or the media for this mess.

Steve, you must still be in school.  Do you realize that 40 cents of every federal dollar spent is borrowed from the Chinese?  If you don’t speak up and stop this, by the time you are my age the government will take over half your paycheck, like in France.  And when things aren’t going so well over there, the government is broke and can’t do much of anything, so they just riot.  Is this where we are headed with OWS?

Tina, hows Sarah’s campaign doing?  If you recall, I predicted what she would do, and she never disappointed me.   Are you still a follower like her few remaining dillusional supporters at C4P.  It forever amazes me how some people can fall for a false and dishonest facade and never once ask the important questions and details that would otherwise take down the false facade.  As Palin’s star fades in the sky, she can laugh all the way to the bank with her supporters money they believed was going to a worthy cause.  Her supporters may not be the most intelligent people on earth, but I feel very sorry for those who gave her money thinking she could save the world into what they imagined it should be.  I feel even worse for those who gave because of the SarahPac letter sent out 2 weeks before she finally confessed.  Her political career is ruined, and her stint on FOX News is about to end.  Her endorsements will also mean very little to those she endorses and will not change the outcome in any election.

  • steveknows

So that’s how Buch financed the Iraq war without raising taxes?

My speaking up is directed at growing the economy through needed public works projects, like FDR did the last time the economy was this bad.

I don’t believe that’s what OWS is about, but I believe that you do.

My source is the news coverage that we’ve all heard, that you don’t like, and therefore can’t believe. But I can.
They didn’t get an ordinary ‘severance deal’, and it’s disingenuous of you to say so.
And what’s your point with  the five figure settlement” remark? It’s not enough to impress you? Any amount is proof of his actions. And five figures could be one dollar under 100 thou.

But this isn’t about convincing you that it’s true; it’s about you trying, and failing, to convince us that it’s not.

I forgot to bring this up in my last comment to you, but the President or any of the GOP candidates are not required to devulge their college transcripts.  With his accomplishments at Harvard, and the graduating honors he recieved during graduation, I don’t think any of the GOP candidates are going to be asking to see his transcripts if they offer to show their’s.  Also, in reply to you stupid and pointless question as to why Politico has not tried to devulge his transcripts, why hasn’t the Republican channel FOX News, tried to do the same.  Besides, to get his college transcripts like anyone, he has to give his authorization first before they are released.  I would have loved to seen Sarah’s transcripts if she would have allowed them to be release.  I see your also a racist after viewing your remark.

I have interacted with hundreds of women in my professional life.  Somehow I have managed to conduct myself in such a way that not one has ever accused me of harassment.  I have also managed to have never place myself in situations where such accusations would be considered plausible or credible; let alone be sufficient to necessitate the issuance of a five-figure check and a non-disclosure statement prior to a woman quitting (or being forced to quit) after my interaction with her.

This happened not once, but twice with Herman Cain – in the same organization he led.

Whether or not you believe these allegations, it is hard to accept that the National Restaurant Association would never have asked Cain about these matters before cutting two five-figure checks (no small slice of a quarterly operating budget).  For Cain to first suggest he knew nothing about the matters alleged is a bit hard to take.

Further, if my employer had to ask two other employees to leave because of issues related to my conduct (alleged or otherwise), and felt that whatever happened merited paying the departing employees five figures each; I would be fired, and I would not soon find employment anywhere in my entire industry.

Why does Cain expect as a pass, when none of us would ever get one in a similar circumstance?

Singing a song wouldn’t get me out of it.  I am not buying the “let Herman, be Herman” bit anymore.

  • david r
