Obama: Religious Liberty Doesn’t Mean You Get to Deny Others Their Rights

Barack ObamaPresident Obama spoke last night at a DNC LGBT gala and addressed the idea of balancing out religious liberty with the rights of LGBT individuals.

According to USA Today, the president made it clear that the United States is a country where religious freedom is embraced and tradition is respected.

But at the same time, Obama said, “We also have to say clearly that our religious freedom doesn’t grant us the freedom to deny our fellow Americans their constitutional rights.”

Religious liberty has been a big issue for Republicans over the past year, with controversies from the outrage over religious freedom legislation in Indiana and other states to the current controversy over Kim Davis.

Days ago, when Pope Francis was still in the U.S., Obama said that the U.S. stands tall “in defense of religious freedom and interfaith dialogue, knowing that people everywhere must be able to live out their faith free from fear and intimidation.”
