Oprah Shows Up On The Daily Show To Send Audience To ‘Rally To Restore Sanity’

video

Stephen Colbert said it best: “Just for the record Jon, your rally is supposed to be about sanity, and that was insane!” The ten minute comedy bit somehow started with Wolf Blitzer‘s inquisition of Christine O’Donnell’s which denial, turned to a surprise cameo by Stephen Colbert (appropriately clad in a “invisibility cloak”) and ended with Oprah Winfrey appearing live via satellite to offer each audience member a trip to the rally. It was, in short, awesome television.

Oprah now joins Arianna Huffington as the second major media player to very publicly get behind Stewart’s “Rally to Restore Sanity.” While the tenor of the “Sanity Rally” is light and comedic, the HuffPost buses and Oprah involvement are certain to bring criticisms from some quarters who will claim that this rally is somehow ‘”astroturf,” the term for fake and a non-organic grassroots movement. But who cares? Even it’s awfully hard to criticize the mission of restoring sanity. Plus, it’s all delightfully fun to watch unfold. Well done Mr. Stewart, Colbert and Oprah.

The Beck rally had thousands of bused in people, so there is nothing to say from the right about astro turfing.

  • Cubby

    “which denial”?

  • Big Eddie

Sign up early to ride the Huffington Enquirer lead bus , Moussaka One .

  • Moderate

Having the Huffington Post and Oprah pay for the buses definitely makes it astroturf. Next we will have the SEIU paying people to attend. Can you imagine the uproar if Fox News had paid for the buses to the Restore Honor rally.

“this rally is somehow ‘”astroturf,” the term for fake and a non-organic grassroots movement. But who cares?”
    Colby Hall

Exactly right! It’s OK to smear and attack the Tea Party as “astroturf”, but when it comes to a phoney leftwing rally, who cares?

  • Not Your Typical New Yorker

Are you liberals getting embarrassed yet? I look forward to this liberal fest on the mall, this is just what the country should see right before the election and should drive the final spike to complete the democrat destruction come this November 2…

When you liberals wake up on the 3rd you will be gagging on our teabags…ENJOY!

  • philipjames

Isn’t it fascinating how the liberals are so freaked out about the Glenn Beck Restore Honor Rally? Now they are in their “we have to put on a bigger one” mode. Its almost as if they feel threatened… do you think?
Could it be… could it be that the “people out there” are not their puppets and are doing things they don’t approve of?
Its actually funny to watch the left wing wackos (Oprah included) stumble around trying to figure out what to do about that damn Beck rally. Damn, it was so big and looked so impressive. How did he do that? We can’t let that happen to us.
So, first the race baiting Sharpton rally looks puny, then the Sgt. Schultz rally was a fizzle. Now the “we are the real ones to do this” group is in action… Arianna, Oprah, Stewart, etc…. we have to get our left wing zealots out in force to show those deluded people who is really right.
Meanwhile, all of us sane people have moved on while these idiots stumble bumble around. We are working on Nov. 2, while they are still trying to counter the Honor Rally. Isn’t it wonderful to see the left so screwed up??

Stewart doesn’t constantly call his rally grassroots, the tea party does despite all their corporate sponsorship.

I just shake my head every time I read comments on this site.

This isn’t “the liberal rally.” It is a goof. He is making fun of this stupidity.

If you don’t get the joke, there is no way I can explain it to you.

At this point, you now call me a joke and a stupid librul.

And I go on with my life.

I assume the Oprah “appearance” was filmed while Jon was in her studio and it seems to be a brilliant way to “merge” the two rallies, which is guaranteed to blanket the wires and produce a viral video. Terrific marketing and kudos to Stewart’s crew.

    Otherwise… folks… it’s a television show.

Jon Stewart doesn’t profess to be an evangelist and his middle-road philosophy could probably best be demonstrated by his slapdown of Crossfire and the way he eviscerated Chris Matthews. I’m sure he’s not going to campaign for any particular party or candidates because that’s not who he is and it would do tremendous damage to his brand, plus it probably wouldn’t sit well with the stockholders.

Now, I haven’t looked at the President’s schedule and if HE asks to make an in-person or via satellite appearance, Jon may agree to it, but I don’t think they’d let the President say something to directly endorse either side,. Instead, Obama would probably stick to something relatively benign about the importance of voting and if it happens, he would make the appearance because HE would like to reach the demographic and Stewart would be agreeable because it would generate publicity.

I’m not in on the planning, but I imagine that their skit will have Colbert advocating “fear”, Stewart trying to reason with him and at the end of the thing, they’ll probably come to some type of agreement. In between acts, there will be a few clips, a handful of “stars” and likely a band or two.

But in the end, it’ll just be a television show to be broadcast on Comedy Central.

Colby has not put up an article EVER about how Christine O’Donnel was having to debate Wolf Blitzer when she was supposed to be debating Chris Coons….WHICH??? Honestly Colby – and YOU made FUN of Palin for “refudiate”???? Perhaps you should APOLOGIZE to Sarah.

No biggie of course when lefties astroturf — then it’s A-OK, but hey, let’s accuse the right of astroturfing.

PS) I didn’t watch all of Beck’s rally, but I don’t recall it being an explicit political event. Perhaps that’s what those who hang on his words heard, but that’s more of a reflection upon themselves.

I’d like to thank the Tea Party for being the first group to get off their asses and vent their anger at the bailouts and the ongoing romance between business and our elected officials. I think they deserve credit for being truly concerned about their country.

I’d also like to thank the media for abandoning their role of actually informing and educating the public about the issues and focusing on the loud extremes. If that’s what it takes to get us off our asses and realize we have to stay involved in what’s going on in our country I’m all for it.

We should be pissed off. But not so much at each other for having different thoughts and ideas. We should be pissed at leaders who have let us down, and ourselves for lingering apathy that allowed it to happen.

  • http://Race4Congress.com Magister

Uh.. a clarification because I can’t edit and before I get hit; One doesn’t have to agree with someone to “hang on their words”, I simply meant those who give them importance.

First, let me share the disdain most people who are interested in this rally have with the right left divide. I am assuming you have a team for which you “root” in elections, and I will assume that team starts with an R.

    I do not.

I have voted for Republicans and Democrats.

I really don’t care which team wins.

I see all this anger in the streets and I shake my head.

    Why?

Because I know it will go away when your team takes back over.

But there will be no real difference in how things are run.

Sure, we’ll spend money on some different things. We’ll have different things that are supposed to get us worked up.

But nothing will change on the path we’re on.

So, Stewart has been saying for a while that it’s hard to get people to take to the streets to say, “Can we just calm down a minute?’

What you don’t get is that “the liberal rally” was that stupid thing with Ed Schultz. And it was astroturfed. And stupid. Additionally, it was stupid.

But people like me, who are interested in the Stewart rally also think the Beck rally was stupid.

We think all of these things are stupid.

And that this is the joke in having a stupid rally in the first place.

Because just like Beck’s stupid rally solved nothing, nor did Schultz’s, neither will this one.

    Please insult me now.

So….Oprah, who had Obama on her show and endorsed him with the irrational boot licking that became Obamamania, and who wouldn’t have anyopne from the other side of the political spectrum on her show, says we need more sanity. Hmmmm.

Translation: Gee I hope this gives the Hindenburg I endorsed a boost just a couple of days before the election so I’ll lend my mighty countenance to it.

    Not transparent, is she?

  • newzmaker

I’m confused about the purpose of Stewart’s rally. I thought the rally was originally organized, to mock the insanity of politics, in DC, today. With Huffington and Oprah getting involved, does this mean that this rally has now turned into a cheerleading rally, for Obama? If so, what a load of crock.

Oprah, how dare you support something? This is further proof that you support stuff.

“I have a rally too!” is what Stewart and Colbert are saying.

Remember during a debate when John McCain mentioned that he had a bracelet from a military family who had lost a son? Remember what Obama said? Let me remind you…

“Jim, let me just make a point. I’ve got a bracelet too. From, Sergeant, uh, uh, from the mother of, uh, Sergeant, Ryan David Jopek.”

Now, in all their childish mocking displays, Stewart and Colbert speak for the left, speak for the vapid and incompetent liberals who nod agreement on command…”I have a rally too!”

Kinda funny…until you look behind the curtain and find…nothing.

What are you talking about? Stewart is part of the problem! Hes yet another DNC shill in the media who uses their power to discredit and attack people on “the right”. Its no coincidence that everyone backing this “rally”, are left wingers in the media!

This is a partisan, leftist rally and no amount of yours or Stewart’s spin is going to change that.

For myself, I am in favor of some sanity in our politics (and our discussions). You can be liberal or conservative or libertarian, and still want this.

And I am against fear mongering.

Each of you must make your own choices on these issues. Are you really for the division and hatred that this country is now going through, is is a little more sanity and less fear a better path?

Blair, no insults, your post was well thought out and worded. I understand how you feel. I support the Tea Party, but that doesn’t mean the Republicans are “my team.” I feel as wary about the Repubs as I do the Dems. I am hoping we can get people in Congress who will be fiscally responsible and know they will be voted out next election if they are not. It will be a hard fight to get business as usual turned around, but it is time we took the first step. I am hoping this election will be that first step.

  • dahni

I want to go to DC too. Can anyone get my name on Oprah’s list so I can get a flight before everything is booked up by others going to the insane congregation of Stewart and ‘what’s his name?’ If not, maybe the seiu, or the farm workers union, or the united auto workers or some other union will pay my way. I can carry a sign if you want we to do so.

The laughing will commence in ernest on Nov 2nd, which we will now call the main event! Until then we might view Stewarts rally as the prelims!!! Perhaps it’s all pointless since we already know who wins the fight but thinking on this further I do think its beneficial to chronicle liberal madness regardless of who wins. The good guys always win in the end we know this and October 31, will be no different than the day before, the liberals will still be losing their jobs at record numbers. Knock Knock, who’s there? Its the Jon Stewing rally, you’re all so insane!

Welcome to “Jesus is a Devil” rally on Oct 30th!

So the other day I was walking near the crack district downtown where the addicts live and it suddenly dawned on me that Stewarts rally is an attempt at giving unsuccessful dead heads a stage to vent about all that gets their goad about conservatives, Beck in particular. I actually saw one of the ice addicts telling the other addicts who were sitting there that they were all crazy! It was both funny and sad because they all seemed to have addiction issues equally, its just that one of these guys had the audacity to call the others crazy. Liberals who think Beck supporters are insane should look at the people you say are sane and ask what’s insane about this picture?? To denigrate Tea Party members who openly state that they are seeking to wean Congress off its spending addictions, means Stewart must retreat to a different place, where perhaps he might try to suggest that limited government and the idea of self government is somehow undesirable, insane, or wrong headed. The Jews called Christ a devil, in doing this they placed themselves not only further under Rome’s Iron fist but at the wrong end of history. Jon is Jew who like the Jews of Christ’s day cannot recognize the truth when it stares him in the face. So I’v renamed Stewarts rally. It would be more appropriately called …..”Jesus is a Devil” rally!

  • mugatu

Wow some angry people. Oprah is starting a new channel at the end of the year so she wants some exposure, why is it a big deal, its called Capitalism and a whole 225 people. Huffington wants to tap the young audience of Jon/Stephen thats called Capitalism, I thought that was what this country was based on, or since some of you dont like it its wrong now? He stated repeatedly this is not an anti-Beck rally. Outside of the few getting a “free ride” the rest of us are all paying our own way.

The grassroots, well if Jon like Beck and most of FOX went on TV everyday saying it (the TP) was grassroots then its fine to make an accusation, he never said that. Even in TDS forums the most die hard fan isnt saying its grassroots.

To tired to clear things for some of you, try to come maybe you can talk to people, still disagree, but, at least respect them.
