Rep. Gohmert Suggests Obama Chose Debt Deadline To Coincide With Birthday Party

Finding a method to the madness that has been the scramble to pay America’s debts in time to not default has certainly been a challenge for all those attempting to follow the narrative. But as for the timeline, this may be one of the more bizarre theories to come out of the debate: Republican Congressman Louie Gohmert, in an interview with Newsmax TV yesterday, suggested that the reason August 2nd is the deadline for the debt talks may be that the President has a “birthday bash” to attend the next day.

Speaking dismissively about the alleged seriousness of the deadline to raise the debt ceiling, Rep. Gohmert admitted to being “a little bit cynical” about the date chosen and its meaning. “we find out the President has a big birthday bash scheduled for August the 3rd,” he tells the program host, “celebrities flying in from all over. And lo and behold, August 2nd is the deadline for getting something done.” Gohmert continued to rail against the birthday party, calling it “maybe the biggest fundraising dinner in history for a birthday celebration,” with the host interjecting that the price per person to attend was around $36,000. “Isn’t that amazing,” Rep. Gohmert asked, “the timing of it?”

While the Department of the Treasury has long repeated that the debt debate deadline is very real, Republicans have been suggesting for some time that it may be pushed back, though it is safe to say that Rep. Gohmert may be the first to suggest that the Treasury is only pushing the deadline to assure the President enough time to celebrate his birthday, and one can’t expect too many Republicans to hop on this bandwagon.
