That Didn’t Take Long, Now Did It: Keith Olbermann’s Covering the State Of The Union, Via Twitter

You didn’t actually think Keith Olbermann would go away quietly, did you? The former MSNBC star and Countdown host has kicked off the next phase of his mercurial career with plans to cover tonight’s State of the Union address. He won’t be on the anchor desk at NBC, of course, but on his couch (or something) covering the speech–and the reaction–via Twitter.

Olbermann, who made a triumphant (too strong?) return to Twitter last night, promising “the reports of the death of my career are greatly exaggerated.”

Olbermann also debuted his own hashtag, #FOK (Friends of Keith) and managed to fire up his massive Twitter following, sending his name into Twitter’s “Trending Topics” worldwide within 45 minutes of his return.

Now, it turns out, #FOK is also the name of his fledgling one-man news operation: “This is an update from #FOK News. Tonight’s State of the Union will be live-tweeted by our team. Well, by one of the guys. OK – by me.”

Much has been made about Olbermann’s next step–and whether it could include a web presence. It’s interesting to note–as Damon Kiesow does today on Poynter–that Olbermann may have lost his platform at MSNBC, but he’s brought a huge chunk of his audience with him: “With nearly 200,000 Twitter followers, Olbermann’s online audience is almost 20 percent the size of his typical TV audience.”

And so #FOK News is up and running. Will you be watching? Er, reading?
