Trump Responds To Letterman’s ‘Racist’ Accusation, Cancels Appearance On Show
This picture might be the last time you see Donald Trump appearing next to David Letterman. Last week when Letterman interviewed Dr. Phil, the late night host wondered whether Trump’s ongoing questions of President Obama’s background were in fact “racist” and whether Letterman should ask Trump for an apology the next time he appears on the show. Trump was watching, and he’s not happy.
Trump responded to Letterman’s charges in a blunt letter:
“I was disappointed to hear the statements you made about me last night on your show that I was a ‘racist.’ In actuality, nothing could be further from the truth and there is nobody who is less of a racist than Donald Trump. . . . Based upon your statements, and despite the fact that we have always done so well together, especially in your ratings, I am canceling my May 18th appearance on your show.”
Trump also canceled any possibility of him doing a “Top Ten” list which Letterman’s staff wanted him to do. Actually, given Trump’s history of returning fire to celebrities who said bad things about him, Trump’s response here was pretty mild. Potentially Trump likes Letterman enough to hope that it’s actually Letterman who apologizes for the accusation? Or maybe Trump just thinks the harshest punishment possible for a television host these days is if he denies them his appearance as a guest.
