Whoopi Goldberg Comes To Mel Gibson’s Defense

video

Whoopi Goldberg spoke up today in support of Mel Gibson. Faint support to be sure…but support nonetheless. On The View this morning Goldberg said she was unwilling to call Gibson a racist, despite the offensive and abusive language he has been caught on tape using. Said Goldberg:

You can say he’s being a bonehead but I can’t sit and say that he’s a racist having spent time with him in my house with my kids. I can’t say it and so I really just need to say that. I don’t like what he’s done. Make no mistake.

At which point Joy Behar asked Goldberg to explain Gibson’s anti-semitic remarks to police officers a few years ago

Drunks say stupid stuff to people all the time because they’re drunk. They’re out of control. They are not thinking they are idiotic. That’s why I don’t like alcohol. I can’t say anything about that because I know what people are like when they’re drunk. This rant, I don’t think he’s drunk on this rant.

When Joy Behar pointed out that plenty of people get drunk and don’t use that language and moreover, perhaps Gibson is the living example of in vino veritas, Goldberg responded that she didn’t think Gibson was drunk in this instance but that’s he’s an asshole. Which, if you’ve listened to the tapes you know is a rather large understatement. Watch below.

Whoopi will defend ANYONE who is famous…except Sarah Palin.

    Whoopi is wrong.

    Mel is a racist.

He’s not “Rush Limbaugh” racist, but racist nonetheless.

well, I’m sure Whoopi would point out that Mel didn’t mean “RAPE raped by n****rs,” you know…

I can’t believe a single word uttered once on the tape is the center of the story. How about the horrible things he was calling his ex-girlfriend or his admission in the newest tape that he knocked her teeth out. Once again we’re losing sight of the real story in a fog of faux racism.

  • NORBIT

Well, apparently the rest of the media is UNWILLING to call the black panther advocating the slaughter of ‘cracker’ babies a racist either!!

    …but THIS GETS THE HEADLINE?????????

  • notsofast

First, Mel needs a lot of help. From listening to the tapes, this guy is out of control. How someone as successful and as rich as he is can be this angry over a woman is beyond me.

Second, Whoopi did not defend Gibson. She simple said as far as she knows, he isn’t a racist. Of course, Joy “Bewhore”just loves to label everyone except libs. She loves the race card.

What Mediaiate conveniently did was end this clip just when Sherri was going to make a point. Sherri said she was angry that Mel was making “black males” the fall guys for rapists. “Why does it have to be blacks that are doing the raping?” she asked.

Sherri then mentioned Sandra Bernhard’s racist rant that “if Palin ever visited New York, she would be “gang-raped by my big black brothers.” Sherri condemned this and then Whoopi asked, “Is Sandra Bernhard racist?”

Joy “Bewhore” just sat there and said nothing.

If you appreciate free speech, notions of political correctness, and the process of defining its limits, etc., Gibson is pushing all the buttons. Gibson is doing what Rush often does, total political incorrectness. He will definitely recover from this.

  • valkyrie101

    oops, notions of political in-correctness.

As always… Val does what Val does… bring everything back to someone he/she doesn’t like politically.

“Hey Val, what would you like for dinner?”
    “Sarah Palin is dumb.”
“Okay, but do what chicken or steak?”
    “Glenn Beck is a racist.”
    “Ugh.”

  • ktward

Gibson’s racist remarks might be offensive, but they’re hardly the most disturbing element of his rage rant.
The dude is pathologically unhinged– no wonder Oksana (?) fears for her safety. (Just listening to his rant kinda scared the crap out of me even.)

Not sure what that is supposed to mean, since I did not criticize Sarah, my favorite Republican. My point is that “saying” crazy things is a right. Of course people might be offended, and people may not like it, and they also have every right to not like it, but the fact that we allow people to say outrageous things, is part of our unique liberty here in the U.S. There are limits to that, and Gibson is right up against the limits. In fact, given the threatening nature of what he said, a restraining order is appropriate. On the other hand, if Gibson says and does the right things, he will recover.

First off all Sarah Palin is not famous she is infamous, big difference and second sure what Gibson said was racial but he is an admitted alcoholic with anger issues, so lets just give him the benefit of the doubt. Whoopi knows him better than any of us, so why should we not believe her.
As for you ImNotBlue, you like michellef (the racist) are just partisan hacks who get your talking points from Fixed News and Drudge. It is sad when the Conservative movements 2 saviors is a quitter ( Palin) and a racist fear monger.(Beck and 90% of Fixed News) Classy..

Whoopi Goldberg also supported Roman Polanski by lying and saying it wasn’t really rape. She the repulsive starfucker on Earth.

Yep, that is why Mel’s rants so irk the conservatives. Mel was one of their main guys. Anti-abortion, in favor of bringing mandatory prayer back in school, proponent of having lots of babies, and all things conservative… Now they are like, hey, why are you giving so much coverage to this?

  • RTB

    Nice valkyrie….agreed
You cant condone this guy’s dialoge or actions of recent…the guy needs a 30 day de tox, and i d say 6 months of counseling, including anger management, psychological assesment and a couple hours a day on a couch with a shrink….damn shame, he’s done some great work in the past, hope he gets help

I was wondering when someone would bring up that lie:

Some people are already accusing you of making a ”liberal” film to get back into the good graces of Hollywood.

It’s not that at all. I’ve always been very independent about the way I see things. Everyone always presumes I’m a Republican. I’m not. I couldn’t vote for either one of those guys in the last election. I looked at the pair of them and was like, What do you want to do — get punched or get kicked? It was a terrible choice to have to make. So I found somebody else on the ballot who was an independent who I liked the sound of. I can’t even remember his name.

I didn’t say he was a republican. However, given his views on abortion, stem cell research, prayer in school, etc., Gibson is clearly a conservative. Do you agree?

I don’t know what his views on those issues are… nor do I know what his views on other issues are. Perhaps he’s more “conservative” than “liberal,” but to group him in with a political movement is foolish and incorrect. It’d be like saying the NBPs, racists who want to kill White people, are liberals. I don’t think either grouping is fair.

  • valkyrie101

What shall I call him, progressively challenged?

This pathetic Whoooperes should have remained in the gutter instead of becoming a Hollywood creature.

This is just a bunch of wordplay. How do you define conservative? Is it anyone who lives a traditional lifestyle adhering to a strict interpretation of a western religion, or do you mean a political ideology? I personally live a pretty conservative lifestyle, but most who are familiar with my political views on the “culture war” would classify them as moderately liberal. I regard my politics as conservative, but decidedly NOT Republican (I did not vote Republican in the 2008 elections, nor do I plan to in the 2010 elections).

Mel Gibson has not only denied being Republican as the earlier quote from ImNotBlue states, but he also worked with Michael Moore and likes his films (see the URLs below). Why all the mental gymnastics to prove that a bigot MUST be politically conservative? What I am about to say is anecdotal, but hopefully it will count for something: I am not white, and I will tell you that I have met bigots of all political stripes. One of the most racist people I’ve known in my life was a supervisor I had years ago at a different job I was working now. She disliked blacks and was extremely xenophobic, and once told me that she believed that a law should be passed that anyone who wants to come to America should be required to be not only fluent in English but HAVE NO ACCENT EITHER. This is like saying that if your grandfather didn’t vote, you shouldn’t either. Catch my drift? This woman was a full-blown New Deal, FDR-lovin’ Democrat. I’ve met other Democrats like her, and I’ve also met racist Republicans and non racist Republicans. Strangely enough, the Republicans that I have met that are racist have also tended to be “moderate” Republicans in terms of their economic views rather than “conservative”.

Long story short, Americans need to quit their ridiculous “intellectual package dealing” if there is to be any chance of a real discussion on issues. “conservative” is not the synonym of “racist”, and being “socially conservative” (I prefer the term “traditional”) does not necessarily mean “politically” conservative.

That is one of the things I find ironic about this whole situation. Someone is actually defending Gibson on this! Could it be because Hollywood finds his politics agreeable even though they object to his catholicism and “lifestyle”? I don’t know, but I find it “interesting”. I am also aware of some very racially insensitive remarks made by vice-president Joe Biden before he became Barrack Obama’s running mate. I found it interesting that he was so easily forgiven, and that his remarks drew very little media attention. Could his politics have something to do with that too?

This is my observation of how Republicans and Democrats (what people think of when they hear “conservative” and “liberal”):

Republicans are challenged to prove they are NOT racist.

Democrats are challenged to provide they DON’T hate the military.

Both are absurd “challenges” because you can’t prove a negative.

  • ImRubberYoureGlue

Sexist, racist men like Whoopi don’t even bat an eye at Mel’s misogyny.
