vivian-schiller_6.2.11

Yesterday, we told you about rumors that Vivian Schiller, the former CEO of NPR, was in talks with NBC to lead digital efforts at the network. Today, those rumors have been confirmed. Schillr joins NBC News as its new chief digital officer, meaning she’s charged with overseeing digital strategy for for NBC News and MSNBC, as well as for properties like EducationNation.com and theGrio.com. (So much for concerns over leanings, amiright?)

You may remember Vivian Schiller, the former CEO of NPR, from her role in the media storm surrounding a sting video, created and edited by James O’Keefe, showing NPR executive Ron Schiller (no relation) making disparaging comments about Republicans and the Tea Party movement.

Shortly after announcing her departure, Schiller vowed to return to media, saying she planned to remain in journalism. She’s made good on that promise: Schiller is currently in talks with NBC News, where she will oversee digital projects.

Ex-NPR CEO Vivian Schiller has made her first public remarks since her ouster, telling the International Women’s Media Foundation in Washington D.C. that she’s “not done” with a career in media. “I certainly plan to stay in journalism.”

Schiller resigned this month in the messy aftermath of a video “sting operation” conducted by James O’Keefe, which caught two NPR executives on hidden camera making critical comments about the Tea Party.

It has also, according to 22 journalists from NPR News, “done real damage” to the entire organization. In an open letter, they write that they were “appalled” by Ron Schiller’s comments caught on tape.

Well it is officially a bad week for individuals named Schiller who used to work for NPR. First there was Ron Schiller, who was caught in a hidden camera video sting making negative comments about conservatives and Tea Partiers, and now NPR’s Media Reporter David Folkenflik has revealed via Twitter that CEO Vivian Schiller (no relation to Ron) has been forced out by the board at NPR because of this controversy.

Juan Williams Fallout: NPR’s CEO Gets No Bonus, SVP Of News Resigns

An NPR investigation of the firing of news analyst Juan Williams has determined that the dismissal was “in accordance with the terms” of Williams’ NPR contract, which allowed Williams or NPR to end the agreement for any reason with thirty days’ notice.

Still, the NPR Board has adopted a series of recommendations and policy changes, and accepted the resignation of SVP of News Ellen Weiss.

Apparently determined to wring every last ounce of story from the Juan Williams firing, the O’Reilly Factor sent out its inimitable Jesse Watters ambush team to track down NPR CEO Vivian Schiller.

NPR CEO Schiller Apologizes For How Juan Williams Firing Was Handled

vivian_schiller

Five days after NPR terminated news analyst Juan Williams and set off a media firestorm (albeit a somewhat gleeful one of the part of Fox News) of criticism, NPR CEO Vivian Schiller has apologized to her NPR colleagues for the manner in which Williams’ abrupt departure was handled. It’s important to note that Schiller did not apologize for the fact that Williams had been fired, simply the manner in which it was undertaken.

Not surprisingly the subject of Juan Williams came up on today’s (excellent) Meet the Press roundtable. Much of the political fallout from Williams’ sudden dismissal has focused on the government funding NPR receives and a number of the usual political suspects have called on Congress to investigate whether the government should be funding NPR at all if they are simply going to fire people willy nilly for expressing controversial views on Fox News.

It was rally around Juan Williams this morning on Fox News Sunday. Williams, who is a regular panelist on the Fox Sunday show (where he often crosses swords with Bill Kristol) appeared this morning along with Kristol, Brit Hume, Nina Easton, and host Chris Wallace, and was the recipient of much love, support and indignation.

A Wrathful Juan Williams Targets NPR, Former Coworkers As Factor Host

Before the Juan Williams case, the media had a standard mode of handling newly radioactive cable news personalities: a public apology, a few weeks of silence, and some high-profile interviews with more reputable cable news personalities. Juan Williams is unique not only in that his firing appears to many as particularly egregious compared to that of, say, Rick Sanchez, but Williams’ path to redemption appears to be an all-out war with his former employer.

Bill O’Reilly, Juan Williams Slam NPR On The Factor

oreillyjuanwilliamsnpr video

There was no question the first thing Bill O’Reilly addressed on his program would be the ouster of Juan Williams from NPR. Sure enough, it was the first topic O’Reilly touched, and he grabbed hold of it with gusto. He almost immediately called the firing a “disgraceful decision,” did not hold back on anyone either directly involved in the firing or perceived to be involved…and the brought Williams himself on to talk about it.

NPR CEO Says Juan Williams Should Have Kept Comments Between ‘His Psychiatrist Or His Publicist’

The back and forth continues between Juan Williams, Fox News, and NPR. Earlier today NPR CEO Vivian Schiller told the Atlanta Press Club earlier today “he should have kept his feeling about Muslims between himself and ‘his psychiatrist or his publicist.’” UPDATE.

NPR Tells Employees They’re Not Allowed To Participate In Jon Stewart’s ‘Sanity Rally’

Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert Announce Dueling Marches on Washington

This is interesting. NPR has just issued a memo to its employees reminding them of the company’s ‘News Ethics Policies and Social Media Guidelines’ and noting that these policies prevent them from attending Jon Stewart’s upcoming ‘Rally to Restore Sanity.’

NPR President Vivian Schiller Responds To NYT Paywall Announcement

Last week, Vivian Schiller, CEO and President of NPR, offered the Daily Beast her opinion on the New York Times’ recently announced pay wall. Basically, she applauds their efforts and really isn’t sure whether or not it will work. But as the head of one of the largest donations-based media organizations in history, Schiller doesn’t really need to worry.

NPR Hires VP For Diversity In Response To Complaints

Usually, a new organization’s hiring of a diversity chief wouldn’t be big news.  But for an organization desperate to shake its Stuff White People Like image, the announcement is news. Two months after National Public Radio came under fire for the lack of racial diversity in its management, NPR hired Keith Woods as its new vice [...]

Interview: NPR’s Dick Meyer Discusses NPR.org Redesign, Visual Vocabulary

EXCLUSIVE

Dick Meyer: We’re not an organization with a marketing and advertising budget of any consequence, so our growth is driven by the quality of what we do. That’s gratifying. Our great hope is that our redesign will not only notch our growth up to warp speed, but help member stations find greater and greater success on digital platforms.
