Anderson Cooper Shames Lowly Daily Caller Writer With Comedic Lesson In Sarcasm

video

CNN’s Anderson Cooper gave a comedic lecture on the topic of sarcasm and satire on AC360 Thursday night, prompted by a post on The Daily Caller that accused Cooper of saying it was not a “big deal” for a 16-year-old girl to marry a 51-year-old actor, which was the subject of Cooper’s “RidicuList” segment on Tuesday night (and which we posted here on Wednesday). In that segment, Cooper clearly mocked the marriage, calling critics of the age difference “romance haters.” Turns out Laura Donovan, who writes for The Daily Caller, missed the joke.

Donovan’s story begins: “Unlike much of the population, CNN anchor Anderson Cooper isn’t repulsed by the Las Vegas nuptials of 16-year-old singer Courtney Alexis Strodden and 51-year-old actor Doug Hutchison,” which, as Cooper pointed out Thursday, contains a key typo and misses the point entirely. “By the way her name is Stodden, not Strodden, but why quibble about facts, Daily Caller?”

“I bet at the Daily Caller, if someone tells a knock knock joke, everyone runs to the door to see who comes in,” said Cooper as his tore the Daily Caller story apart–and noted that it has now been edited to make clear Cooper was, you know, kidding.

    Yawn; Cooper is a bore.

Fact: Cooper is a sick puppy to like the idea of a 51 year old man marrying a 16 year old girl.

  • lonestar77

    Fascinating.

I think a few of the writers on Mediaite can take some of that advice from Anderson.

And maybe Anderson should take some lessons from Stewart about how to be funny, and sarcastic.

  • Emma

Anderson Cooper at his best — brilliant.

    PWND

    Hehehe…

  • lane

Gee, Cooper, you were kind of a jerk here. Way too harsh on the writer. When you use deadpan sarcasm, the writer may very well have used the tame technique. I thought the mediaite story used the same approach, which did create some confusion.

The difference is that you’re a high profile CNN anchor. Calling a ‘nobody’ writer on a blog is harsh and petty, even if unintentional. While his advice is good, when you do this to a junior staff member it’s just mean. Do it online on your show’s blog, don’t do it on national TV with her freaking picture. MEAN.

  • slickerwick

Well, I guess there’s nothing much else going on in the news, right Anderson? He must have felt his reputation as a newsman was impugned, therefore he had to report on it. Ironic, when you think about it.

  • slickerwick

Is it my imagination or are the anchors and hosts on the cable news channels trying to compete with Stewart in the comedy and schtick department?

  • Big Eddie

Well , Anderson Cooper would probably never marry a 16 year old girl .

Pretty sad that Cons don’t get sarcasm, funny I always thought that Republicans didn’t really believe in all that batshit crazy stuff they pushed and were just being really sarcastic.

She is only 22 the girl who married the old guy is only 6 years younger than her. Oh, brother.

Good to see Tucker is getting the major talent for his little blog, here is Laura Donovan age 22′s blog about “creepers”. This is hard hitting stuff.

    http://creepshowwatch.tumblr.com/

In high school, I partnered up with a gentle giant jock type for a class project. Though a star lacrosse player, he had few friends and often spent lunch period by himself. I received extra credit for teaming up with this guy, so I told him he could come to my house over the weekend to work on our assignment.

He arrived on a Saturday evening and got along fine with my parents, who were intrigued by his stories of traveling to India. Everything was fine until he yanked several large pieces of paper from his backpack.

Within minutes, I realized he’d drawn my portrait and wanted to show my mom and dad.

“Every time I’m bored in class, I stare at Laura and draw her face,” he said, waving the unflattering photos at me. “She’s divine.”

My parents said this was sweet, but I felt violated. I’m sure the young girl in “American Beauty” was just as creeped out when her new neighbor began filming her without permission.

Judging by his work, I think her turned out fine. In this case, he was a jerk. Hopefully he has the sense to apologize. He can tweet this or blog it, just not trash her on his CNN show. Everyone makes mistakes.

    ‘I love redheads’

Yesterday on the metro, a young man came up to me and said, “I love redheads.”

The more creepers I meet, the more I love dogs!

I would have been more likely to respond if he hadn’t been with a group of heckling guys. When I continued to ignore him, the creeper said, “Especially FEMINIST redheads.”

For my second flight, an old New Yorker guy glanced at my boarding pass and said, “Is your boarding pass number the same as your age?”

    “If I look 30, I’m in trouble, ” I said to him.

Never ask a woman how old she is, and if you do, don’t use the airport as an excuse to be a total creepshow.

    http://creepshowwatch.tumblr.com/page/3

  • OxyCon

Actually, while Copper was trying and failing at humor, he was looking down his nose at the young girl’s parents…this coming from a guy who used to hang out at the drug and homosexual infested Studio 54 when he was 10 years old.

Also, anyone else notice the 1950s Martha Stewart Unilever commercial here the other day? She was 15-16 years old playing the wife/boyfriend of a middle aged man, just like the real life story Cooper was covering.

“This article has been updated to clearly explain that Cooper’s segment was done in a sarcastic tone, as it was a part of his “RidicuList” segment.

Which has only served to make Laura Donovan’s remarks sound even more tone-deaf.

    Huh?

I think Cooper handled the piece with delightful humor, grace, and irony.

That’s FAR and AWAY better than she would have gotten from ANY other cable news host, and frankly, better than she (and her “updates”) deserves.

  • Marty73

Anderson was right and very funny. Donovan deserved to be mocked and schooled by him for her inability to recognize sarcasm and satire, something that others had no problem figuring out instantly.

I still don’t agree, but I do see your point, I just disagree. Mediaite’s headline was “Anderson Cooper Defends 51-Year-Old Actor’s Marriage To 16-Year-Old From ‘Romance Haters’” Where’s their ridicule?

It’s fine if he emailed her or sent a tweet. Doing it on national TV on someone so new and on a blog still strikes me as being rude.

I wouldn’t call out a junior staffer at a meeting, I’d do it face to face because it’s the right thing to do. Treat them as I would like to be treated. Especially when I was inexperienced.

She wasn’t a junior staffer. Your comparison is false. She is a young, inexperienced writer who tried to make a name for herself at Anderson’s expense on a public forum by accusing him of being in favor of something very sleazy by most people’s standards.

Someone should’ve taught her that you don’t pick on a guy who has a nightly TV show he can use to respond to her.

And by the way, many of us, myself included, did criticize Mediaite for missing the point.

    Key points.
    1. The initial comments by Cooper were made during his “Ridiculist” segment, and that was all the HINT the Daily Caller should have needed that this was sarcasm.
    2. The idea that one should not criticize an employee publicly has no connection with this situation. The “accuser” is not a subordinate, and the “accuser” was very public, and was called out publicly. That is fair.
    3. Not said, but obvious: The initial attack was an amateurish attempt to show that the “lamestream” media is biased, and it just does not fly.

  • libra blue

I realize that Anderson Cooper’s humor is rather lame without a side kick assist, but I find it difficult to believe anyone took this seriously.

No matter what, it won’t hurt Anderson, it will only supply him with even more publicity for his new show. He will milk the hell out of it.

  • lane

    Cecelia said:

I posted here when people read the article, didn’t watch the clip, and assumed he was actually supporting it. You can check my posts on it if you don’t believe me.

If I was in Cooper’s position, and I knew she was an junior writer, I wouldn’t mock her on national TV for making a mistake like this. I’m surprised he did. I think it’s beneath him to do it.

My analogy is that you are gentler to people’s feelings when they’re inexperienced and you are at the top levels.

She rightfully got schooled. Web writers are all trying to be Gawker, but they lack the brains and the wit. It doesn’t matter if you’re The Daily Caller, Mediaite or the New York Times. You’ve got to get your facts right if you don’t want to look like idiots — especially when you’re piling on the snark. Most journalists learn that in internships with editors who can catch their mistakes before anybody sees them. Apparently websites have determined that accuracy is a quaint anachronism.
