Ari Melber on Rudy’s Latest Baffling Comment: Could Be a Case of ‘Giuliani Gonna Giuliani’

Rudy Giuliani yesterday made some rather notable comments about the Trump Tower Moscow timeline that set off MSNBC’s Ari Melber wondering why he would say it.

Giuliani appeared to reveal that conversations about that planned tower went as late as November 2016. He was asked by George Stephanopoulos, “Did Donald Trump know that Michael Cohen was pursuing the Trump Tower in Moscow into the summer of 2016?”

Giuliani responded, “According to the answer that he gave, it would have covered all the way up to November of––covered all the way up to November 2016.”

When asked to elaborate, he told CNN the following:

Giuliani said to CNN later Sunday that Trump told Mueller’s team he spoke to Cohen about the proposed Moscow project but did not specify exactly when those conversations took place.

Giuliani said Trump doesn’t really remember when the conversations took place but is safe in what he told Mueller because he gave a general affirmative answer that that the discussions happened sometime during the 2016 campaign.

Giuliani added that the conversations could have been in June or July of 2016.

“Up until November 2016, they could have had a conversation about Trump Tower Moscow, and it went nowhere,” Giuliani told CNN.

Melber showed the ABC clip and tries to make sense of it:

“After Trump’s past lies, Rudy Giuliani is opening the door to somebody working on that Russia deal. Maybe somebody other than Michael Cohen, all the way through November 2016. Which––just think about it tonight, it sounds bad. Why would Trump’s own lawyer put it out? Is this another Giuliani gaffe? Well, maybe not. On the one hand, you always have to keep in mind a classic legal principle, which is Giuliani gonna Giuliani, which means some gaffes. But on the other hand, if someone did keep working on trying to get money from Russia for Trump all the way through November, and if Bob Mueller already knows about it, then yeah, Trump’s people may keep leaking out these apparently bad things one at a time to try to blunt the impact of Mueller’s final report.”
