CNN’s Brian Stelter on Linda Vester Allegations: ‘Shocking Response By Tom Brokaw’

CNN’s Brian Stelter appeared on New Day to analyze the allegations of sexual harassment against NBC anchor Tom Brokaw, and fiery letter he penned responding to the claims.

Linda Vester, a former NBC correspondent, said Brokaw “groped and assaulted” her in the 1990s, leaving her “deeply traumatized.”

In response, Brokaw sent a letter — which eventually leaked — to his NBC colleagues asking for support, in which he decried Vester and tried to discredit her as someone “who had trouble with the truth,” enabled in her “drive by shooting” by the outlets that reported her allegations.

Then, 115 female NBC News employees, including Rachel Maddow, Andrea Mitchell and Mika Brzezinski, signed a letter in support of Brokaw, calling him “a man of tremendous decency and integrity.”

On the backlash Vester is facing, Stelter said “this angry denial from Tom Brokaw is a big part of it.”

“He called her a character assassin, absolutely denied the allegations, said she was seeking fame and fortune,” Stelter said. “This was a shocking response by Tom Brokaw.”

“Clearly he thinks he’s the victim, and not Linda Vester.”

Stelter explained that Brokaw still serves as a special correspondent for NBC since retiring as the anchor of NBC Nightly News, but the network has not decided to take action in response to the allegations.
