Dan Abrams On GMA: Doctor In Casey Anthony Trial ‘Should’ve Been Defense’s Star Witness’

As the plot of the convoluted Casey Anthony trial thickens, Dr. Spitz, an expert witness, took the stand to explain his doubts that the duct tape found on the child was placed there late and evidence as to the child’s autopsy was questionable. Yet upon cross-examination, many of his theories themselves were found faulty, and the defense must now return to square one. On Good Morning America today, Mediaite founder Dan Abrams explained where the defense must go now and how they failed to launch their “star witness.”

“This should be the guy,” Abrams told host Robin Roberts this morning, noting that he argued the duct tape “was placed there after the body was dead; he’s saying the autopsy was shoddy.” Unfortunately for the defense, however, the prosecution “pretty effectively undermine[d] much of the testimony.”

Then there’s the question of an ex-con witness that has been linked to Casey’s father, George, who, once again, the defense were unable to use to their advantage given the man’s press conference denying any involvement with Anthony’s father or that the cell phone number suspected to have been used for the two to communicate was not in his possession at the time. Here, Abrams noted, the defense must be hoping the jury was not able to catch the press conference or any of the media surrounding the case, as it would severely impact their perception of the evidence.

I’ve been following this very closely. In fact, I haven’t missed any testimony except for the odd moment or so when the live stream has an ad. I started following based simply on the fact that Caylee Anthony looked very much like one of my granddaughters (especially the very large almost compelling eyes) at that age.

It’s possible that Dan Abrams may have understated the impact of Dr Spitz on the defense. Under cross examination he detailed his theory that the duct tape was applied post decomposition.

He testified that someone would have reattached/held the mandible in a virtually anatomically correct position before then placing the duct tape across the lower portion thereby producing the unusual, skeletanized remains in an open setting never have the mandible attached, condition of the remains.. It was reported by several in the court that at that part, and once or twice more, some jurors were smirking and almost laughing.

Although the defense has presented no evidence to bolster the claims made in their opening those who have seen the trial in its entirety can only conclude that that someone must be the meter reader, Roy Kronk, who found the remains, removed and kept them and then replaced them to be found again by him on 12/11/08.

The defense has so far proven nothing, zip, zero. Dr. Spitz was almost a joke with his theory about the duck tape. He appeared to be a grumpy Old man that needs to retire forever and quit looking for 15 minutes of glory for the 60,000 autopsies he has claimed to have preformed over his 100 years of service.
