Ex-Obama Official Fact-Checks Newt Gingrich on SpyGate: ‘You Have No Evidence…’
Newt Gingrich and Marie Harf had an interesting back-and-forth on Wednesday’s Outnumbered as they debated President Donald Trump‘s “SpyGate” claim that the FBI improperly acted against him.
The former House speaker, today’s #OneLuckyGuy, was on the Fox News talk show to discuss how the Department of Justice Inspector General’s upcoming report could be problematic for James Comey and Andrew McCabe. As Gingrich trashed Comey (“a terrible person who did terrible things”) he was challenged by Harf — a former Obama official — who said Gingrich’s argument is entirely dependent on the yet-to-be-released IG report.
The two went at it, as Gingrich claimed there was no chance the FBI acted without Valerie Jarrett‘s oversight in 2016. Harf countered by saying, “you have no evidence, you’re just throwing it out there.”
The discussion moved on to Comey’s defense of McCabe and the possibility that the former FBI deputy director could flip and testify against his old boss for an immunity deal. They also looked at the indications suggesting that the IG report will say that Comey was “insubordinate” when he used to head the FBI.
When Gingrich got a chance to re-enter the discussion, he suggested Rod Rosenstein ought to be fired while saying it was “inconceivable” that the Obama-era White House didn’t know what Comey, McCabe and Loretta Lynch were doing in 2016. “We’ll wait for evidence and we’ll see,” Harf said, to which, Gingrich said “The Justice Department has done everything it can to avoid the evidence.”
SpyGate lost more steam earlier today, when current House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) held a press scrum today during which he said that he agrees with Trey Gowdy‘s (R-SC) view that the FBI didn’t do anything improper against Trump.
