Did Markos ever see combat while in the army?

Wikipedia says, no.

After graduating from Schaumburg High School in Schaumburg, Illinois,[4], he served in the U.S. Army from 1989 through 1992. He completed training at Ft. Sill in Oklahoma and fulfilled his three-year enlistment as a Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS)in the fighting 69th. Fire Direction Specialist. while stationed in Bamberg, Germany.[1] By his own account, he “missed deploying to the Gulf War by a hair.”

Lots of big talk for someone who never saw combat. What a slimeball.

(PS- Let’s also remember that the show was hosted by DAVID SCHUSTER… you know, that guy who MSNBC claims is one of their unbiased anchors. How does someone “unbiased” host a show like the Ed Show… or Olbermann’s… and still get called “unbiased.” The only difference between Schuster and the other guys is that Schuster is even less connected to reality… if that’s possible.)

At least Markos served. I also served my country and I’m so tired of all of these chicken hearts trying to speak for veterans it is insulting when they wrap themselves up in the American flag but wouldn’t dare fight for our country. I may not agree with Markos but I would rather listen to a veteran’s viewpoint on veterans health care than a chicken sh-t like Tancredo.

Yeah… funny how the rules change, huh? And anyone who doubts that the Veterans healthcare system is flawed, remember back to the whole Walter Reed debacle from a few years back. Clearly, things aren’t so great… and you don’t need a military history to figure that out.

In February 2007, The Washington Post published a series of investigative articles outlining cases of alleged neglect (physical deterioration, bureaucratic nightmares, etc) at WRAMC as reported by outpatient soldiers and their family members. A scandal and media furor quickly developed resulting in the firing of the WRAMC commanding general Maj. Gen. George W. Weightman [2], the resignation of Secretary of the Army Francis J. Harvey (reportedly at the request of Secretary of Defense Robert Gates [3]), the forced resignation of Lt. Gen. Kevin C. Kiley, commander from 2002 to 2004[4], congressional committee hearings, and commentary from numerous politicians including President George W. Bush and Vice-President Dick Cheney. Several independent governmental investigations are ongoing and the controversy has spread to other military health facilities and the Department of Veterans Affairs health care system.

Nachi, name calling and mischaracterization, while possibly a perfect defense for Kos’ cheap shot, MAY not be the sort of tactic that will win people over towards an agreement with your opinion…..whatever it is.

I wish Markos hadn’t resorted to the cheap shot. Obviously, those who elected not to serve have every right to express opinions on war and peace in our political system.

Since the vast majority of military polling shows overwhelming support for the military health care system, even with the scandalous attempts to privatize much of it that resulted in the Walter Reed fiasco, then it is quite enough to state Tancredo is dead wrong and leave his motivations to the voters.

Whether you agree or disagree with Tom Tancredo, any rational human being would have to admit what a nasty, slimy, vile little prick Markos is. He makes my skin crawl.

Markos is the product of a degraded political culture that rewards kicks to the crotch like the one he delivered to Tancredo. Republicans know this–they’ve excelled at low blows and character assassination since at least the days of Lee Atwater. Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck and the rest of the right wing mouthpieces make outrageous statements all the time that make Moulitas look like a choir boy; when Republicans start calling them out on it, I’ll take them seriously. Otherwise, it’s fair game.

Not much sympathy for Tancredo from me. People like him who voluntarily go to the news equivalent of a seedy flop house should’t be surprised when they are bitten by the equivalent of disease-ridden fleas.

Markos is an embarassment, but it seems Dems. are proud of his tactics.
When you can’t shut your opposition up, you attack them personally.
See how easily he resorts to ridiculing Tancredo. I watch lots of different
news outlets, and I never see repubs. do that, it’s always the Dem. who
makes it a personal attack. I guess when you have no clear values or
principles, all you have to fall back on is dirty, sleazy, personal attcks.

Tancredo’s point was very simple and totally undeserving of any attack by Markos about his (Tancredos) personal record (or lack thereof) regarding military service. What Tancredo was saying clearly was: This is what veterans are TELLING him. He’s advocating on behalf of a group of constituents concerns voiced to him.

His own personal record of military service is of no consequence at all, it’s like saying anyone who has not served doesn’t have the ability (or right I guess) to advocate for or against military issues and policies.

That’s absurd. (and so is Markos)

Markos was not attacking Tancredo. He merely stated a fact. It is public knowledge that Tancredo applied for and received a 1-Y deferment from the Army and did not have to serve in Vietnam, a war that he, as head of the YAFers, so strongly supported on Campus.

With that deferment, Tancredo told the world he is mentally ill with clinical depression and therefore legally could be deferred from the military.

We all know he ran for President in 2008. How did he think, with his mental illness, that he could be deferred from being a private, yet he could serve as Commander in Chief?

Tancredo is also incorrect about the VA.
My brother did serve in war. When he became disabled a few years ago he did seek help from the VA. Thank Heavens for the VA. They were able to diagnose and treat him. Though he is now diabled, at least he receives the proper medical care/treatment/services he so needs right now.

You notice Tancredo named no names of the veterans he supposedly talked to that would prefer to receive a voucher so they could pay for their own health insurance. I have never heard of one veteran who said that. Nor have I ever heard of anyone on Medicare that wants to give it up either. I think Tancredo is talking out of his hat.

You can not compare what the Rethugs are doing today vs what a few (and some on your side) said about GW.

I think the Republicans are doing this out of desperation. They do not have an agenda or a leader they all support so instead, they do all of this name calling.

And again, Markos only told the truth. He didn’t call Tancredo a Muslim or a Kenyan or a Nazi. He said Tancredo got a deferment for his depression. It’s the truth.

I never called you a name. Please try to keep the discussion civil.

Actually, I do not have any relatives who received a 1-Y deferment to avoid the military. I have two brothers and a brother-in-law who proudly served in Vietnam and one in the Gulf War. I have several nephews and one niece who have served in Iraq. My sister and several nieces were also in the military. I’ve worked all of my life and am a grandmother, mother and wife. I am very proud of my family and all they have accomplished.

I do have one brother who was a veteran who is disabled. The VA has provided him significant help and support throughout his disability. He has ALS. His condition continues to worsen, however he and we are all greatful for the services he has received. They provided him and his family counseling and helped them obtain a proper wheelchair, breathing/feeding tubes, and instructions for home care when he is home or when he is in the hospital. It is very difficult and very sad, but the services are vital for him now. I cannot imagine how much more difficult it would be for him if he did not have the VA services.

And you never responded to the story for Walter Reed. Do you really think being a veteran makes them more qualified to see there’s a problem?
