James Carville: Rep. Weiner Wasn’t Popular In Congress Before And Now Pelosi Is ‘Furious’

Former advisor to President Bill Clinton James Carville appeared with George Stephanopoulos on GMA to discuss the question of whether Democratic Congressman Anthony Weiner could survive this scandal. Although many would argue Clinton’s controversy was much worse and he survived, Carville hinted at what ultimately might be the major difference between the two men: Weiner doesn’t seem to be particularly liked by elected Democrats.

Carville explained his doubts about Weiner’s ability to hold on:

“If nothing else comes out, again there’s nothing illegal, he probably can hang on at least until the election . . . but if the facts keep coming out . . . it’s going to be iffy. And one of the reasons is he’s a talented guy but he’s not a particularly popular guy in the caucus. They’re really mad at him. You can just see that former Speaker Pelosi is furious with him.”

Especially when the economy is in such a troubled state, Carville suggests Weiner’s distraction is something the public is justified to be “livid” with.

And Carville wasn’t just sour on Weiner’s behavior, he also had some critical words for President Obama. Carville warned, “when [Obama] talks about the positive news [in the economy] I actually think it makes people angry” given that unemployment is still so high. With polls suggesting candidate Mitt Romney would fare strongly in a head-to-head election with Obama, Carville seems eager to give some tough love to Democrats so that they can get their house in order now.
