Jon Stewart Blames The History Channel For Politifact Giving Him A ‘Pants On Fire’

video

On Monday night’s Daily Show, Jon Stewart responded to Politifact giving him a “Pants on Fire”, by unloading on The History Channel for their historically inaccurate programming. “Apparently the clip we showed was off by around 66 years!” Stewart exclaimed. “For this mistake, I was awarded the fact-checking site Politifact.com’s lowest grade possible “Pants on Fire.” Something the people at Politifact must know that a gentleman such as myself is akin to a death sentence. In this dry weather my ass hair is nothing if not kindling. Of course, it’s my fault for trusting something called the History Channel! You know, with facts about things that happened in the past. The next thing you know, we’ll all find out the Nazis did not employ alien technology in their quest for world domination. You know what, History Channel? You have f*cked me for the last time!”

“From now on, I go straight to the source!” he added, jumping into a DeLorean to go back to the future to ask a mid-coital Ben Franklin about how the colonists celebrated Christmas.

“Well, some of us work, some reflect with family,” Franklin replied. “The more common man spends the day stuffing his face, getting drunk and wallowing in vomit. or as i call it, Tuesday.”

lol…….at least Stewart admits his mistake.

  • Gloves W. Donahue

If it’s on TV or the Internet, it must be true, right, Stew?

So quit researching conservative stances by watching MSNBC and reading the Huffington Enquirer.

  • Anonymous

“From now on, I go straight to the source!” Or double check your work before sitting on your high horse trashing people. Just sayin

  • Anonymous

So I’m confused, why did Politifact give Stewart the pants on fire, when he was just quoting a history channel clip?  Also, is Politifact now fact checking fictional programming?  If so, I would like the veracity of Heroes, Lost, and Grey’s Anatomy checked for facts.

  • Anonymous

Also, is Politifact now fact checking fictional programming?”

    LOL

Are you kidding- The Daily Show is the #1 show libs get their “news” from!

  • The Real Royal Emperor

Doesn’t the comment suggest that the research was by the Hitler, I’m sorry, I mean the History Channel?

  • Anonymous

I don’t think it was Jon who made the mistake. It would appear to be the HC.

  • Anonymous

It must be fun to wipe away all original thoughts and only parrot a few choice talking points.  Anyone getting the majority of their news from a comedy show is a moron.  Whats more likely tho, is that informed viewers who watch the news regularly(or read it online) watch the Daily Show for a humorous slant on the current events of the day.  But you’re right, its so much easier to just go “der, Libs like to laugh and get their news from a jewish funnyman”

  • Gloves W. Donahue

If you have a question about Christmas, you go to someone with Christmas cred, like Andy Williams.

If you want to know if Congress was in session on Christmas the first sixty years, just ask John Dingell to check his records.

ahhh noo… its where we laugh at you baggers.

Fox News could really learn from that.

Doesn’t the show tweak things a bit?  Anyway, I would expect to see something like this on his show.
The OWSers have a new big name endorsement.

Stewart’s mistake was in not watching another Comedy Central show and seeing how badly the History Channel has abandoned the idea of actually focusing on history. Jon and his Daily Show staff assumed if it was on the History Channel, it must be accurate. But as that great courtroom attorney, Felix Unger, once noted, “When you assume…”

Jon was using the material that was on the history channel.  I remember watching Harry (can’t remember his last name he is with NBC now).  He did a whole story on christmas and how we came to celebrite it.  It was interesting.

    Poor boy-

“Solid Liberals are the biggest watchers of the Daily Show with 21
percent saying they view it, with Post Moderns the only other group with
a significant number of Jon Stewart fans (14 percent).”

And why does it take you so many words to say nothing?

    Be sententious, son- be sententious.

  • Anonymous

That’s so unlike a liberal talk show host to blame someone else for their misinformation. How very out of character for Mr. Stewart. So what your saying is, it’s not your fault, it’s the History Channel’s fault that you didn’t do the research and went on the air with your bad information.

  • SouthernYankee

Well if the History Channel does put something on you would think they would have the correct information.  Facts are facts.  Before people start bitching about this particular program maybe the should tune in.  I’m sure it will be on again this year.  Jon got his facts right the first time.

  • SouthernYankee

Now you are the one who is giving us a laugh.  Even Jon Stewart agrees with you on getting the news from a comedy show.  Your showing your ignorance with the comment.  As far as getting real news it has been a know fact that Fox News has the most uniformed people watching.

  • Anonymous

    LOl

I love how you libs are never content with opinions, you got to lie also!

Jon Stewart says those who watch Fox News are the “most consistently misinformed media viewers”

EDITOR’S NOTE: On the June 21, 2011, edition of The Daily Show, Jon Stewart accepted our False verdict and apologized, saying, “I defer to (PolitiFact’s) judgment and apologize for my mistake. To not do so would be irresponsible.”

    http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2011/jun/20/jon-stewart/jon-stewart-says-those-who-watch-fox-news-are-most/

Any other lies YOU would like to share you prevaricating  lib?

  • Anonymous

Nice, don’t give your source because it doesn’t make conservatives look that well.  Well, here it is….

    http://www.pollwatchdaily.com/2011/05/08/study-finds-wide-variance-in-where-different-political-types-get-their-news/

“Fifty-one percent of Solid Liberals read a daily newspaper, with 18 percent reading the New York Times. Thirty-four percent listen to NPR (the highest percentage of any group). Solid Liberals turn to the Times and NPR more than any other group.

Three other groups are at the 50 percent mark or above in reading a daily newspaper: Hard-Pressed Democrats (57 percent), Main Street Republicans (55 percent) and Libertarians (50 percent).”

“Beck and Limbaugh are in single digits for every group except Staunch Conservatives, with 23 percent saying they listen to or watch Beck, and 21 percent who follow Limbaugh.”

“While MSNBC is often depicted as a cable network with a liberal bent compared to the reputation of Fox as conservative, it does not rank high up the list of the choices of Solid Liberals, and in fact, almost as high a percentage of Main Street Republicans say they watch it. Nineteen percent of Solid Liberals say they watch MSNBC compared to 18 percent
    for the Main Street Republicans.”

  • Anonymous

While I agree with your point that he or his fact-checkers should have given the claim a second look, I think this incident speaks more towards why the History Channel is not really fit for such a name.

  • Anonymous

And he was still wrong, son.

Take tour Stewart  knee pads and drool cup off!

  • Anonymous

Son by  quoting the source, I provide the link.

And just how did that report make conservatives look “that well?”

    That libs don’t’ watch/read them?

    What would ya expect, son?

Funny you should link to that.
Here’s the clip from the Daily Show in which Jon says that and goes on to explain why. It’s actually linked to in your link.
    http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/tue-june-21-2011/fox-news-false-statements?xrs=share_copy
He goes on to clearly demonstrate that while he, a fake news show, can be responsible enough to admit a mistake,
{It was actually most polls not every, and they were rated consistently low, but not always lowest} that Fox , a news network who proclaims themselves fair and balanced, spouts false facts fairly consistently including the 2010 lie of the year, and rarely admits it when called on it.

    Really worth watching.

  • Anonymous

Oh please. It was one minor part of a JOKE, and didn’t change the underlying point at all.
Fox has created a bogus WAR ON CHRISTMAS for their target demographic and trot it out year after year so their viewers can be outraged at the godless heathens who want to ruin long held traditions.
It’s too bad their viewers aren’t equally offended by Fox’s habit of spewing BS.

  • Anonymous

I was going to mention South Park’s Thanksgiving show, but there it is. I wonder if the real truth is that space aliens secretly created Christmas so they could dump their extra Chinese food on Earth’s Jews. (this is a joke, people)

  • Anonymous

What do I need to check? Jon Stewart = Liberal / Jon Stewart = Talk show host.

  • Anonymous

Agreed. I think it was a fail / fail situation.

  • Anonymous

What a lot of people miss with Jon is his concern about the truth. He pays attention to the facts and the truth because of his craft. Satire. Good satire is grounded in the facts. He occasionally gets things wrong, and then even uses that to remind the so called news media and the viewing public that paying attention to facts is a good idea and maybe we should expect more of that from those who’s job it is to inform us accurately.

Jon get’s something wrong and he admits it. News networks spread BS and never correct it. Where are our priorities?

  • Anonymous

if you have a question about history, apparently you don’t watch the history channel.

  • Vanessa C

“Son by  quoting the source, I provide the link.”
No, you don’t.  Mike provided the link.

What’s ridiculous is that even when you are quoting from a source you provide, it still fails to back up your original contention that “The Daily Show is the #1 show libs get their “news” from!”

Its mathematically impossible for that to be true when a greater percentage of liberals watch networks news (38%), read newspapers (51%), and/or listen to npr (34%) while just 21% watch the daily show.

Your own source refutes you, and you ask, “how did that report make conservatives look “that well?”"  Well, you’re exhibit A.

I almost think you’re a liberal doing a bad impression of a conservative.  It just boggles my mind how badly you can misinterpret a source that you read.  Maybe you were thinking of sources that showed young people watch about as much daily show as they watch of real news?  But young people != liberals.  You should know that.

  • Anonymous

oh blah blah blah. you’re just full of bullshit aren’t you? Jon has had many conservatives on his program to ask about their stances on issues. So you’re point is not only stupid, it is moot.

  • Anonymous

yeah no where in that quote does it say they get their news from it. nice try notsofast, maybe you should make a new account after being shamed again.

  • Anonymous

awww, looks like cosmos just took you down a few notches, dumbass.

  • Anonymous

yes its the job of a comedy show to verify that a channel dedicated to providing history is correct. Nice one dumbass.

you sound like a broken record, all your comments have libs this libs that, get over yourself, your gripe is with a a comedian on COMEDY CENTRAL, what is wrong with you, people who watch his show know where the damn joke is at because the majority of the people already know of the news he is talking about, jon stewart just puts it in a comedic form, you dont laugh becuase he pokes fun at the right more than the left but he does it to both, it made fun of Obama, Olbermann, Ed Schultz, and he told Stewart to take his ass to China, Anthony Weiner, Bill Clinton, the democratic party as a whole, Joe Biden, etc…. Jon Stewarts mocking of the “news” media is what gives him a certain credibility, and everytime people disagree with you, you have to call them libs. You always act as if republicans are walking angels who have done nothing wrong. Im glad I dont back any political party because comments like yours show how politically divided America is.

  • Anonymous

I like how this show is considered ‘comedy’ when it either says something controversial or gets it’s facts wrong. Otherwise it’s considered scripture by many on the left. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, why is this site so infatuated with a ‘comedy’ show if the site is about ‘media news’?

Also, you do realize you lose all credibility when you bust out the name calling. Stay classy ‘nationman’.

  • Vanessa C

That explains it.  Now I’m just sorry I wasted my time on him.

  • SouthernYankee

I didn’t hear it from Jon Stewart show.  I have read it twice.  Once this year and a couple of years ago.  I don’t watch Jon show all the time.  There you go assuming.  Now I have heard Jon Stewart make comments about not taking his show as a real news show. He has said it is a fake show. I know he said it on Larry King show and even on Cross Fire when it was on CNN. In fact he and the idiot that was on it really got into because he wanted him to bring jokes in and Jon put him in his place. Not long after the show was cancelled.

  • Henry Wood

Looks like you got caught LYIN’, son!

    Got busted, child!

  • Anonymous

The Daily Show is not a “talk show” it’s a comedy show that does political satire and has one guest on per show.
The idea that Jon should fact check one minor part of a joke and somehow failed in his due diligence by not doing so is just so ridiculous, especially when compared to the so called NEWS networks most notably Fox.
More than that, that correction of fact doesn’t alter the valid point that segment was making at all.

  • http://twitter.com/Nietzschean John Smith

Well, Ben, Jon celebrates Christmas by making fun of Christians to the amusement of swpl goyim!

Geez Zakk, bitter much?  That’s OK, Conservatives have funny shows too – like Fox News.  And they make significantly more factual errors than John Stewart – so turn that frown upside down Mr. Sour-puss!!!

They’ve covered jimmy fallon, jay leno, and snl. It seems more dedicated to general media news and media news parody.

There is a certain irony in South Park goofing on The History Channel’s hyperbolic inaccuracies in early November and then, a month later, the hippest man in comedy and his staff writers basically falling for a History Channel hyperbolic inaccuracy, even though The Daily Show show is on the exact same network.

  • Anonymous

I’m not sure if Politifact is fact checking ALL fictional programming, but I know they’re fact checking “Countdown w/ Keith Olbermann.”

What a great job, you can joke about your failures because your unaccountable. Problem is, too many people apply this clowns nonsense to reality.

  • http://twitter.com/runforfun54 Ilene K

Last I checked,Jon Stewart is a COMEDIAN! Oh, and btw Stewart probably makes more fun of Jews than anyone, and certainly also takes his comedic shots at Muslims, so, quit yer whining. OK?

  • Anonymous

I got lost in your personal attack, what was your point? Stewart has the occasional Conservative on his show, so that relieves him of stating facts?

  • Anonymous

Stewart being held to a higher standard than a presidential candidate!?!
Don’t you feel a certain amount of embarrassment for suggesting that in print?

  • Anonymous

Now that’s a truly pithy remark…..I like it!!

  • Anonymous

    Doesn’t Foxnews do the same?

his point was that stewart gets his ideas from msnbc and the huffington post, clearly that’s not true when he actually debates conservatives on his own show.

The kiddies getting their misinformation from Jon Stewart as they wait to scream, shout, and stomp their feet when Jon uses the “F” word should be advised to listen to the rebroadcast of Bill Oreilly and get some accurate information.

Stewart walks the line between editorial comment and parody. I can enjoy him without voting with him. I wish we had more like him rather than raving madmen like Limbaugh, Beck, Olberman, and Matthews to name just four. Oops, almost forgot Hannity.

That said, the most pathetic “newsman” on tv has to be Alan Colmes.
