Maddow: Egyptian Revolts Bring Out Best Of Fox News, Worst Of Beck And Hannity
Rachel Maddow gave her audience : praise for Fox News. Sure, it only came at the tail end of a segment dedicated to Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity entitled “Seriously?!,” but Maddow still took the time out to appreciate the work of Fox’s hard news work after taking a few minutes to mock their opinion coverage.
“Whether or not the press is able to do its job is one of the determining factors in whether a revolution succeeds or fails,” Maddow explained, and while she gave blanket praise to those reporters that had been putting their lives on the line in Egypt, she also noted that just because there is a free press doesn’t mean it’s working well– in fact, for Beck and Hannity, it’s “bringing out the worst” in them.
She then proceeded to play one of the many now-famous clips of Beck equating the Muslim Brotherhood with the radical left, quipping that “we called this segment ‘Seriously?!’ for a reason,” paraphrasing Beck’s argument as: “what you need to know about what’s going on in Egypt is that it means America will be the first to become an Islamic state! Start hoarding food or whatever.” Then she played another clip of a Hannity guest equating the same organization with the Obama administration. As if you weren’t scared enough by that clip, Rachel returns to the screen with nothing but a flashlight to continue telling the spooky tale she heard on the few hours of Fox News she watched.
After that vicious attack, however, Maddow completely shifted her attitude towards all of Fox News– praising those that are gathering news outside of the opinion segment. She even concluded favorably for the network: “For some folks in the media– and including some folks working at Fox News– it is really bringing out the best in their work. But also, there’s Sean Hannity and Glenn Beck.”
