Mika: DNC Chair ‘In Her Own Glass Box’ by Limiting Debates, ‘Anointing’ Clinton
Morning Joe co-host Mika Brzezinski joined the ever-growing chorus calling for the Democratic National Committee to sanction more debates for the party’s presidential candidates, accusing DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz of “anointing” frontrunner Hillary Clinton.
“We need these conversations,” Brzezinski said after playing a clip of Wasserman Schultz being heckled over the weekend by chants of “we want debates!” at the New Hampshire Democratic Party convention. “We need to see them happening between Democratic candidates so they can challenge each other. It’s better for the country. I would argue it’s better for the candidates, too.”
Former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley has been on the front lines of the fight to add more debates. At a DNC event last month, O’Malley used his speech to blast the DNC for its “cynical move” to limit the number of contests. Two DNC vice chairs recently called the decision to sanction only six debates a “mistake.” Many Democrats view the move as one that coronates Clinton as the party’s nominee.
“Debbie Wasserman Schultz seems to be in her own glass box about this, and it’s one that wants to anoint one candidate and leave all the others out,” Brzezinski continued. “Which is fine, but she’s absolutely wrong about this. Everyone’s yelling at her.”
Former Democratic Rep. Harold Ford, a Clinton supporter, also said there should be more debates. “I think Chairman Wasserman Schultz is wrong to stand before a group of Democrats and try to lecture them about what they should be concerned about in the room,” he said.
Clinton herself has also said recently that she would be “open” to participating in more debates.
