House Speaker Paul Ryan is getting dragged by political observers after he punted questions about the increasing tension between President Trump and Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
When asked about the latest indications that Trump could fire Sessions, Ryan said that the decision was completely up to the president. Ryan also shrugged off the notion that if Sessions were dismissed, Trump could appoint a new attorney general who could fire Robert Mueller in the middle of the former FBI director’s special counsel investigation.
“The President gets to decide what his personnel is, you all know that. He is the executive branch,” said Ryan. “He determines who is hired and fired in the executive branch. That’s his prerogative. If he has concerns or questions or problems with the Attorney General, I’m sure he will bring them up with him himself.”
As it were, people took note of how Ryan danced around the question, and they’re not particularly impressed.

The descent of @SpeakerRyan has been Shakespearean. https://t.co/QgImfQxaFW

Sure this is accurate, but @SpeakerRyan looks spineless when he refuses to address what’s ethical or appropriate. Anything for a tax cut. https://t.co/GmhBsCtOTJ

.@SpeakerRyan pretends that the President’s abuses of power are just a matter of process. When the country needed his leadership he cowered. https://t.co/3lHv3jzxSh

Even I didn’t expect @SpeakerRyan to give Trump permission to fire the man investigating him for obstruction. This is beyond pathetic. https://t.co/seQHKy5Cko

Ah, but they don’t. @SpeakerRyan and @SenateMajLdr long ago ceded their power to @realDonaldTrump. They are not an obstacle to him. https://t.co/EF7DingtHZ
