Rachel Maddow Goes Nuclear On PolitiFact: ‘You Are A Disaster’

Video

MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow — who has never quite been a fan of PolitiFact — took the fact-checking site to task Tuesday night, specifically going after its decision to describe Florida Senator Marco Rubio‘s recent comment that the majority of Americans are conservative as being “Mostly True.”

RELATED: Rachel Maddow To Fact-Checking Site PolitiFact: ‘You Are Fired’

In determining the “truthiness” of Rubio’s comment, PolitiFact looked at The Gallup Poll’s 2011 results on the matter, which saw 40 percent of Americans describing themselves as conservative versus 21 percent who describe themselves as liberal, and 35 percent identifying as moderate. “In Gallup’s poll,” PolitiFact correctly notes, “the number [of conservatives] has never crossed the 50 percent threshold.” And dividing up the independent votership in terms of right-leaning and left-leaning Americans, PolitiFact adds, sees a pretty much even split between the two groups.

And yet… PolitiFact deemed Rubio’s “Mostly True.” Which preetttyyyyy much made Maddow lose her [bleep].

Seriously! Claim A: False! Claim B: False! Overall PolitiFact rating: “Mostly True”! PolitiFact, please leave the building. Do not bother turning off the lights when you leave; we will need them on to clean up the mess you have left behind you as you are leaving.

PolitiFact, you are a disaster.

“Liberal” is an ugly word now, its weird. Last year, there was a similar study that concluded there were more “Conservatives” than “Liberals” yet there were more “Progressives” than “Conservatives”. I dont think most people even know the definition of the words.

Point being, there’s often a huge gulf between what people say and what they actually do.

It’s hilarious to see a left-wing nutjob call out a bunch of left-wing nutjobs at Politifact for being dishonest

  • http://3chicspolitico.com/ SouthernGirl2

Politifact need to take their site down. Their credibility is shot to hell. They’re lying liars!

  • Anonymous

Liberals can’t handle the truth when it doesn’t confirm their prejudices.  By the way, if 40% are conservative,  and half of moderates are  split evenly (which in itself isn’t a given since liberals are only 21% overall), if you figure half the moderates are conservative you add 17.5% and conservatives number 57.5% compared to only 38.5% liberal.  So, Rubio seems pretty well on the mark…   My argument would be if 40% of America are conservative then 40% of the moderates are too, compared to only 21% liberal, so slightly less  than half the 35% – lets say 13%, compared to 1/5 for liberals – lets say thats 7%, so that makes the math 53% conservative to 28% liberal.  No matter how you cut it, Maddow’s ideology is the minority (thank god).

  • DoNotMindMe

Maddow is the one that has broadcast at least 2 fake news stories (from parody sites similar to ‘The Onion’) – I would say she is the real disaster here.

The truth is that conservatives are a minority. Your math is totally baseless. 40% is not a majority by any stretch of the imagination. Polit”Fact” rated an objectively false statement as “Mostly True” instead of as the lie that it is.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_34VQ3NDNOFFUF6R7ALXY6O33S4 Cal

PolitiFarce is “left-wing”? That’s truly hilarious.

Yes, Politi”Fact” is worthless, and has been for a long time. What’s the point of a “fact-checker” that doesn’t actually check facts?

  • Anonymous

    BS….

    She was fooled twice.

  • Anonymous

Of course this article conveniently forgets to mention that Rachel Maddow has a long and frequent history of getting busted by PolitiFact.  They nail her all the time and Rachel flips out over it all the time, including last year when she freaked after getting caught again misleading on Wisconsin’s politics and PolitiFact stuffed her big-time in a follow-up: http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/article/2011/feb/25/responding-rachel-maddow/

I’d think if Will Wheaton, er, excuse me, Rachel Maddow was a conservative, Mediaite would’ve been sure to mention this.  Then again, Mediaite is staffed by lying liberal phonies akin to Maddow.

  • Anonymous

    dude you suck at math…

  • http://profiles.google.com/greenleegazette James Greenlee

Chuck, the PolitiFact article (correctly quoted by Maddow) said the conservative/Republican number maxed out at 45%, same for liberal/Democrat. That isn’t “most.” Politifact is wrong, Rachel is right, and all of that stuff you wrote is twaddle.

  • http://profiles.google.com/greenleegazette James Greenlee

Rachel was fooled by “ChrisTwire” once, as many people continue to be. She copped to it, and seemed somewhat delighted by being taken in. Doubtful that The Onion got her, though it has taken in many conservatives.

  • Tucsonense

So the flaw must be that 40% of Americans are conservative. Come on!!! We all know this number is HIGHLY INFLATED.

  • Anonymous

40% is not the majority Chuck.  Politico broke down the moderate between left leaning moderates and right leaning moderates, but there were still moderates in the middle.

  • Anonymous

So… since she was fooled and republicans were fooled… don’t you think its hypocritical commenting that she was fooled when you guy were fooled yourse….. never mind its clueless to explain your a republican…

    carry on.

  • teri bear

One may say they lean left, one may say they lean right. Yet neither might vote that way.  Rachel has a right to give her opinion on her show as do the many conservatives on Fox have a right to give theirs. Calling  her names and stating her sexual preference is just ridiculous. I wish we could debate these articles on a political topic without resulting in insults being thrown around.

  • Anonymous

When you guy were fooled yourse?

    What?

Are you ten years old, or did you attend a failing public school? LOL

  • Verreauxii

What logic are you using there, Chuck?
    A Most Americans are conservative.
B Conservatives are the biggest ideological group.
Those two statements are not identical. It is wrong to conflate. There is also a difference between an ideological group and a political group. You seem comfortable mixing them up.
I will give you two reasons why you are wrong. If conservatives have always dominated the US landscape, why have 2 liberal presidents been elected in the past 20 years if liberals are only 1 in 5 Americans?
Secondly, how do you explain the popularity of progressive policies today?
    http://www.washingtonpost.com/2012/02/14/gIQALm4cDR_photo.html

Basically, self ID is a wash. Look at what people actually do or vote for.

  • http://3chicspolitico.com/ SouthernGirl2

Are you kidding me? Who dropped you on your head? Politifact need to leave the building. It’s over for them. They’re lying liars who can NEVER be trusted with the word “fact”.

Blacks are social conservatives. Actually, they are the most religious voting block in the US. Those two go together. They are economic liberals and vote for the DP for that reason mainly and because of the GOP’s southern strategy.

Oh…we also want her to wear a little white apron and pearls all the time.
    Even at breakfast.
She will name the boys Wally and Theodore, Chip, Richie and Opie.
    She’s gonna’ love it.

  • Hout Bosques

I’ll help – I’m a liberal: someone who sees things as they really are, without ideology, & generally accepts the Enlightenment, science, & the ideals of human rights & equality.

Progressives are not necessarily liberals, but mostly turn out to be so. They believe in better government making for better lives for more people.

(You can see the daylight between liberals & progressives right there: liberals experience somewhat less frustration with things progressing then regressing.)

Conservatives are … well, I’m really not sure what they are any more, because most of those who call themselves conservatives these days are anti-science reactionary authoritarians. There actually used to be folks who called themselves conservative progressives or vice versa. I think most of those folks now call themselves Richard Lugar.

  • Jardino

I didn’t like my 7th grade history teacher, but he taught me something that I’ll always remember:

[1] Reactionary – wants to go backward
[2] Conservative – wants to keep things the same
    [3] Liberal – wants change
[4] Radical – wants change NOW

Most people are “liberal.” Everyone wants progress, unless you are a Teatard who thinks only property owners should vote. (That’s what the Founding Fathers thought.)

  • Hout Bosques

Oh, too bad: you JUST missed it, by 180 degrees.

Except that it’s PolitiFarce that has a long history of lying. They get repeatedly called out for “fact-checking” that doesn’t actually check the facts and results in inaccurate ratings.

  • Hout Bosques

People don’t know what they are any more. People who used to call themselves socialists now call themselves moderates. Lots of people who self-identify as conservatives are in fact radical regressives. Lots of others who call themselves conservatives are all for big ticket items making up the social safety net, but just don’t understand what being for those says about their political positions. People are, individually, for the most part, ignorant, ill-informed, easily led, illogical, over-emotional & stupid. But collectively the various flawed parts largely cancel each other out, resulting in a collective wisdom that’s simply dull conventional.

    “Conservative are….well, they’re just dumb.”

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_34VQ3NDNOFFUF6R7ALXY6O33S4 Cal

And most of those 40% don’t actually know what it really means to be conservative. If you ask them what the want the government to do, you’ll see support for a great many liberal ideas.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_34VQ3NDNOFFUF6R7ALXY6O33S4 Cal

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_34VQ3NDNOFFUF6R7ALXY6O33S4 Cal

My point is that 40% is not a majority. It’s a minority. That should be obvious even to you. But apparently, the dunces at PolitiFarce don’t understand that.

  • Anonymous

So, you have actually talked to that 40% of those conservatives and found this out for yourself?  When someone makes an outrageous claim like you just did with NO backing behind it, it just makes you look ignorant.  You should already know that.

  • Hout Bosques

… except that’s not what I wrote. In fact, it’s not even close.

  • http://www.ryanstake.net RyansTake

How people define themselves really doesn’t tell you very much about them. Ask what a conservative position on Medicare, Don’t Ask/Don’t Tell, or Social Security is and they’ll probably tell you it’s to get rid of Medicare and Social Security as we know it and restore Don’t Ask/Don’t Tell. Yet, the VAST majority of the country supports Medicare, Social Security and the repeal of DADT.

A majority of self-described conservatives are glad DADT is gone and don’t want Medicare or Social Security touched.

Therefore, I submit, the terms “liberal,” “moderate” and *especially* “conservative” has more to do with tribalism — convenient words for people to pick their sides — than it describes how well people mold into the widely-accepted meaning of each of these positions.

When you get right down to it, this country is a Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security loving nation that’s pro-choice, isn’t a fan of all the wars we’ve been getting into and wants to put Wall Street and the Banks feet to the fire. A majority of us now favor same-sex marriage, passing environmental reforms, spending government money to create jobs and public transportation. We want more money put into education and we’re even in favor of some basic gun control, like making sure crazy people and criminals can’t buy gets and that oozies and military-grade assault weapons are off the streets.

A lot of those issues — maybe even most of them — poll well even among people who self-describe as “conservative.”

I’d say that makes this country a LOT more liberal than most people realize, there’s just a cognitive dissonance between where people stand on the issues and what people like to think of themselves as being.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_34VQ3NDNOFFUF6R7ALXY6O33S4 Cal

No, it’s simply a matter of polling showing that the majority of Americans back a great many liberal policies. When you get into the range of over 80% support (such as for raising taxes on the rich), mathematically that has to include at least half of the 40% who identify as conservative.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_34VQ3NDNOFFUF6R7ALXY6O33S4 Cal

You mean the Senate elections that left you still in the minority? Dumb*ss.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_34VQ3NDNOFFUF6R7ALXY6O33S4 Cal

Why is it that right-wingers love to talk about ratings so much? Oh, because you’re a bunch of sheep who all watch Fox “News” and think that makes you special.

  • Anonymous

Should have said congressional elections, but my point was–as you should know by now–that the democrats, as Obama himself put it, “got shellaced.”  You’d have to be a real dumb_ss to not know what I was talking about, even with my typo.  I think you knew exactly what I was talking about.

  • Anonymous

Yea, that’s it, Cal.  How did you guess that I think I’m special?  And, by the way, ratings are a pretty good indicator of who gives a sh_t about your message.  Hence, no one cares about her message.  It’s pretty simple, Cal.  Perhaps right wingers believe in bottom line results, unlike many liberals who support Obama even without his providing any results.  Ratings are representative of results.

  • Hout Bosques

Right! Politifact won a freakin’ Pulitzer! Okay, it’s their only prize – but what did Maddow ever win?

Weeeeeeelll.. Politifact is right with ranking this as true, don’t get me wrong I consider myself slightly liberal, but it really is mostly true. If Rubio said a plurarity of Americans are conservative, he would get a true rating, but as majority means over 50%, he was wrong on that. A Classical Liberal, aka libertarian by today’s standards, is a true liberal.
Modern “liberal” are nothing more than thieves who stole the once proud name liberal.

  • Anonymous

America’s quality of education had plummeted since the Dept of Education’s inception in 1979. You can’t argue against these facts.

Only a foolish “liberal” would think that something that has failed miserably would be considered a success.

  • Anonymous

Who would have imagined in our lifetime, that PolitiFact, one of the most favorite and frequently quoted source of “facts” by those(and their sheeple) on the left, would now become a thing of ridicule by purported journalists, in a supposedly news network.

    Fascinating how things change….smh

Who knows, maybe someday the left-wing “news media” might actually say Obamacare in its entirety, is in fact a disaster by any standards.

There was a time that all I heard the left refer to for truth was “PolitiFact”

  • AIiveStiIIKickin

I truly love watching liberals when they are presented with FACTS and the beads of sweat gather on their foreheads….veins pop out in their necks…..huge fangs appear over their lips…blood rushes to their faces…and they hiss like pissed felines.

Reactionary- wants 70% tax rate like in the 50′s (wants to go backwards)
Conservative-wants clean air and water (wants to keep things the same)
liberal-wants the exception to always be the rule( changing the majority of lives for a small minority)

Life is unfair? Thats rich right there. Then why don’t you quit trying to make it artificially fair.

Your whole ideology is based on some evasive definition of enforcement of fairness….yet you proclaim that life is unfair…and then of course say…..deal with it.

And since we’re in the business of labeling conservatives anti science, then we ought lable liberals anti-math.

Because they see no issue with our entitlement spending leviathon, they see no issue with our deficit and debt, and have convinced themselves that taxing millionaires and billionaires will some how fix all our budgetary problems.

And then, we ought to see liberals/progressives as also ant-reality.  Because they can simply look across the Atlantic at all the insolvent nations who have arrived at the endgame of progressive liberalism, as their nations slowly collapse under the crushing weight of their debt, and yet liberals make no connection.

Yeah..we’re the dumb ones….good call Hout.

I could care less what LiberalBias.net has to say.

I can watch the bias when I hear the mainstream media not talk about how Obama’s proposed budget would never pass the senate with 51 votes (even though thats all it needs),

or how his budget would continue to accrue massive debt after the budgetary tricks are exposed.

Or the fact that two budgets are sitting in the Senate right now that HArry Reid refuses to put on the floor,

Or how the shrinking unemployment numbers are a result of the workforce hemmoraging people from the labor pool.

Do I need a website to tell me that all these things are simple oversights in reporting and not Bias.?

I do if thats what I want to believe.

You can also find radical regressives in large numbers down at the OWS protests.  They call themselves anarchists.

What side of the political spectrum do they subcribe to?

  • Anonymous

Really….then maybe they ought to change their opinion on the GOP when they collectively realize what the lefts “War on Poverty” has done to them.

  • Anonymous

Politifacts problem is that reality has a well known liberal bias.  It’s just embarrassing how biased towards liberals they would seem if they call every fact accurately.  Give them a break Rach.

  • Anonymous

Yes.  Some people can judge a statement as fact based on it being objectively, you know, true.  However, it is more sound by far to judge a statement as being fact based on the owner of the statement having won a Pulitzer Prize.

  • Anonymous

Um…if they call themselves anarchists, then they obviously don’t subscribe to any sides of the political spectrum.  However, you seemed to equate regressives with anarchists…interesting.

That sounds weirdly like the plot of the Stepford Wives.  You know that nightmarish film where liberal gals get turned into conservative women, like the one Newt is married to.

  • Anonymous

I never said that Fox doesn’t lean to the right.  Their talking heads do lean to the right, just as MSNBC’s lean to the left.  I will not argue there.  However, my previous post asked for proof that Fox News is “the most inaccurate” of the news agencies.  Being ideological is not the same as being inaccurate.  You are missing the point.

  • Anonymous

Interesting huh?  If you don’t equate anarchists to regressive Ideology…what do you equate them to?

And as for the political spectrum they gravitate to…I dont see them plotting to kidnap DNC delgates, I dont see them violently protesting at DNC conventions, I dont see them a Tea Party Rallies, and when you google who they advocate poltically when they do announce an endorsment….its always a Democrat…..

So is it still “obvious” to you that they don’t subscribe to a political party?

If so…wanna buy a bridge in New York?

Fox News may be the undisputed ratings champion in cable news, but not among black viewers.
The New York Times’ Brian Stelter tweeted that, according to Nielsen
Media Research, Fox News has averaged just 29,000 black viewers in

Good call, Rachel. If PolitiFact for some reason regards Gallup as the fount of all wisdom, then it has to concede that only 40 percent are picking the conservative label, not a majority. What is the factual basis for asserting that moderates are evenly split in the directions they lean? If anything, I would “guess” that most moderates lean leftward, choosing the term “moderate” because “liberal” has been so demonized in recent decades.

Where are these facts we’re being presented with? Rubio’s lies are not facts, and PolitiFarce’s nonsensical rating of his lies as “Mostly True” is also not a fact.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_34VQ3NDNOFFUF6R7ALXY6O33S4 Cal

40% is a minority, not a majority. So no, PolitiFarce was dead wrong to rate Rubio’s claim as “mostly true”.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_34VQ3NDNOFFUF6R7ALXY6O33S4 Cal

No, he hasn’t been “pretending” to govern. He’s governed pretty well, aside from the law of  being too quick to compromise with Republicans who don’t want to compromise.

Nice breakdown Chuck….. but you really don’t have to do any assuming.
According to Webster’s definition of “majority” Rubio was 100% accurate.
    Note #3

    ma·jor·i·ty (m-jôr-t, -jr-)n. pl. ma·jor·i·ties
    1. The greater number or part; a number more than half of the total
    2. The amount by which the greater number of votes cast, as in an election, exceeds the total number of remaining votes
    3. The political party, group, or faction having the most power by virtue of its larger representation or electoral strength
    4. Law The status of having reached full legal age, with attendant rights and responsibilities
    5. The military rank, commission, or office of a major

You didn’t read the entire comment did you? I said that Politico was right that it rated this mostly true, they explained that even though it’s only a plurarity, it’s more then liberals 25% and moderates 35%

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_34VQ3NDNOFFUF6R7ALXY6O33S4 Cal

That’s not “mostly true”. It’s false. 40% is not a majority. “Close” does not count. A plurality is not a majority. It’s simple math. And in the past, PolitiFact properly made that distinction. When Ron Paul claimed there was a national poll saying the majority of Americans favored returning to the gold standard, PolitiFact rated it false, because the poll actually showed 44% in favor. Compared to 28% opposed. That’s a clear plurality too, but PolitiFact rated Paul’s statement false because a plurality is not a majority. What’s different now?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_34VQ3NDNOFFUF6R7ALXY6O33S4 Cal

But Rubio didn’t say plurality. He said majority. Thus, his statement was false, since a plurality is not a majority.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_34VQ3NDNOFFUF6R7ALXY6O33S4 Cal

No, she’s angry about PolitiFarce being an inaccurate and flat-out dishonest “fact-checker”.
