Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) slammed President Joe Biden’s campaign during a recent interview with The New Yorker’s David Remnick.
Pelosi noted in the candid interview that she was dissatisfied with the president’s reelection operation for a long time and believed his chances of winning against Donald Trump were slim.
“I’ve never been that impressed with his political operation,” she told Remnick in an interview released on Thursday. “They won the White House. Bravo. But my concern was: this ain’t happening, and we have to make a decision for this to happen. The President has to make the decision for that to happen.”
Despite successfully beating the GOP nominee in 2020, Pelosi said she was personally frustrated by the Biden campaign’s operation, adding it was not capable of posing a real threat to Trump’s reelection efforts.
However, Pelosi added that Biden’s decision to step aside and endorse Vice President Kamala Harris as the next Democratic nominee was his sole decision. Pelosi claimed she was not that significant in the effort that led to Biden stepping down.
Privately, Pelosi reportedly voiced her concerns to Biden about his electability amid falling poll numbers in key battleground states throughout June and July.
“I really wanted him to make a decision for a better campaign, because they were not facing the fact of what was happening,” Pelosi continued. “We couldn’t see it go down the drain, because Trump was going to be president and then he was going to take the House. Imagine! Imagine how that would be! Well, we don’t have to imagine. We saw.”
The former speaker went on to praise the political legacy of the president by citing the recent prisoner swap with Russia that led to the freedom of journalist Evan Gershkovich along with two other Americans.
Pelosi told Remnick that she hopes to keep her friendship with Biden despite being one of the top Democrats to pressure him to step aside.
“I hope so. I pray so. I cry so,” she said. “I lose sleep on it.”
