Alina Habba Repeats Trump’s False Claim Judge Ruled He Can’t Attend Son’s Graduation
Attorney Alina Habba echoed client Donald Trump’s false claim that the judge in his Manhattan criminal trial ruled the former president may not attend his son’s high school graduation.
Jury selection began on Monday for a trial that will determine whether Trump falsified business records to conceal hush money payments. He has pleaded not guilty to 34 felony counts. After court adjourned for the day, Trump emerged and predictably criticized the proceedings to reporters. The former president also accused Judge Juan Merchan of refusing to pause the trial so that Trump may attend son Barron’s high school graduation.
“It looks like the judge will not let me go to the graduation of my son,” Trump said. However, Merchan has yet to rule on that matter, stating that it is too early to decide.
Later in the evening on Hannity, Habba repeated Trump’s claim.
“This is political,” she told Sean Hannity. “It’s election interference. You’re not even allowing a father – never mind a former president – but a father attend his son’s graduation? And let’s not forget – Passover, ok? Observant the Jews have a right to go and pray to who they want and observe Passover. And this judge would not allow it. Not for any of the attorneys. And there are observant Jewish attorneys on the Trump team and as well on the D.A. team.”
Habba’s comments about Passover aren’t entirely correct either. Merchan ruled that the court will not meet on the last two days of the holiday, which lasts one week.
She concluded, “It’s just a sad state of affairs for the American people. I can assure you of that.”
Trump is the first former president in U.S. history to be criminally indicted. He faces charges in three other jurisdictions, including two federal cases. He is also the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.
