Jesse Watters Justifies Trump’s Attacks on Judge Merchan’s Daughter: ‘He Just Wants a New Judge’

Fox News host Jesse Watters attempted to normalize a criminal defendant repeatedly attacking court staff and their families, as Donald Trump has done.

The former president will go on trial this month in Manhattan where he is charged with 34 counts of falsifying business records to conceal hush money payments. Trump allegedly paid them out to cover up extramarital affairs ahead of the 2016 election, which he won. He has pleaded not guilty to all counts.

As he has done in his other criminal cases and also his civil suits, Trump has attacked the judge in the case, Juan Merchan. Trump has taken matters a bit further by publicly criticizing Merchan’s daughter by name and posting photos of her on social media. That behavior prompted Merchan to issue an expanded gag order telling Trump not to attack court staff and members of their families – including Merchan’s daughter. Under the order, the ex-president is still free to criticize Judge Merchan and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.

Trump’s attorneys are seeking Merchan’s recusal, citing the fact that his daughter is employed by a firm that worked on Joe Biden’s presidential campaign.

Regardless, Trump’s behavior toward Merchan’s daughter is beyond the pale. But that hasn’t prevented right-wing media from siding with the ex-president and repeating his attacks. Tuesday’s Jesse Watters Primetime on Fox News was no exception.

“Now, the media, who doesn’t support the First Amendment are care about corruption covers it this way,” Watters said, teeing up a clip of non-Fox News outlets noting the aberrant nature of Trump’s missives while characterizing them as attacks and harassment that endanger his targets.

“The judge’s daughter isn’t seven,” Watters protested. “She’s 34. He’s not attacking her. He’s just saying what she does for a living. How’s that an attack? He just wants a new judge – one whose family isn’t funded by Democrats.”
