California Dem: Charlie Kirk Had ‘Incredibly Hateful’ Message But Believed in Free Speech, Unlike Trump

President Donald Trump does not believe in free speech, unlike Charlie Kirk, who was in favor of the First Amendment because it allowed him to share his “incredibly hateful” ideas, California Rep. Sydney Kamlager-Dove (D) claimed on Saturday.

The congresswoman, while talking to Al Sharpton on MSNBC’s PoliticsNation, tried to call attention to the “irony” of Trump celebrating Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert losing their late night shows. This showed that Trump is different from the 31-year-old slain conservative activist, Kamlager-Dove argued, because he is using the government to push his enemies off of TV.

“The Trump administration wants to silence critics, silence debate, silence dissent. Which is incredibly ironic, given Charlie Kirk was actually someone who talked about, you know, freedom of speech,” Rep. Kamlager-Dove said. “Now, he said things that were incredibly hateful, but he did say that freedom of speech is important.”

The state representative did not point to any comments made by Kirk in particular that she found offensive.

The California Democrat pointed to columnist Karen Attiah being fired by The Washington Post, after she wrote about the “excessive, false mourning” of Kirk after he was murdered, and President Trump’s lawsuit against The New York Times as clear signs his administration is anti-free speech.

Her comments come a few days after Kimmel was suspended by ABC after comments related to the murder of Kirk.

“We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them,” Kimmel said on his show last Monday.

Kimmel was criticized by many for the claim, considering the reported details point to Tyler Robinson, Kirk’s suspected killer, being a leftist.

Robinson reportedly had a romantic relationship with his trans roommate, used phrases associated with Antifa, and, in text messages released on Tuesday, said he shot Kirk because of the conservative influencer’s “hatred.” Utah officials have said Robinson was “indoctrinated” in far-left “ideology” in the years leading up to Kirk’s murder.

ABC suspended Kimmel on Wednesday, after pushback from Nexstar and Sinclair, the companies behind its biggest affiliates, and hours after FCC Chair Brendan Carr said “remedies” would be pursued against the comedian, if ABC did not punish him first.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt on Saturday said that, while President Trump was happy to see Kimmel’s show go, his administration did not “pressure” ABC to suspend him.
