John Oliver Curses After Being Played Off Stage During Emmys While Paying Tribute to His Late Dog
John Oliver was trying to pay tribute to his dog during his acceptance speech at the Emmys on Sunday when a very badly timed musical cue interrupted him.
Oliver and the team behind HBO’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver took the stage to accept the Emmy Award for Best Scripted Variety Series, and the show’s host expressed his thanks on behalf of everyone. Oliver thanked HBO for “not canceling us” as well as his family, and then he wrapped up his speech by thanking his dog. The music started to play him off at quite possibly the worst time:
I also want to thank — this is going to be very silly — our dog. We had the most fantastic dog. And she was at our wedding, and she got us through a pandemic. She was with us for two pregnancies. And —

And, uh… Fuck you. It is, I feel like Sarah McLachlan right now. She was an amazing dog. Ouch.
But despite the tragic turn, Oliver turned his tribute into a tribute for everyone’s dog: “This isn’t just for her. This is for all dogs. All dogs. You all very good girls. You’re very good boys. You all deserve a treat. Play me off now! Thanks so much.”
